Theaters Cooperate With War Fund Drive All branches of the motion pic ture industry, including the mo vie theater or Eugene, have en listed to help the Red Cross in its drive to raise $123,000,000 for its war fund, according to announce ment from Harold Wyatt, local chairman of the motion picture war activities committee. A. West Johnson, manager of the Heilig and Mayflower thea ters, is Lane county chairman of theater cooperation. Some 16,000 theaters of the na tion will celebrate Red Cross week April 1 to 7, and the movies will assist the general Red Cross campaign this month. Groups of Hollywood stars are starting out on personal appearance tours un der arrangements made by the Hollywood victory committee and the Red Cross. Stars will visit more than 100 cities and attend Red Cross dinners and rallies. As yet, none of these appearances have been announced for Eugene, Mr. Wyatt said. A CLEAN-CUT FROCK To only' four, however, had we presented our "personal" Oscars. This may seem in faint har mony with the votes of the more than 11,000 members of the Acad emy. A look at files of last year's columns may show some compari son between our choices and theirs. Academy choices in some clas sifications are printed below. Quo tations following them are from Fan Fares which appeared in the Register-Guard the day after pic ture concerned first opened in Eugene. Performance, female star: Greer Garson in "Mrs.. Miniver." ' Our choice, too. "It is Greer Garson, as Mrs. Miniver, who is 'Mrs. Miniver.' . She will probably get the 1942 Academy Award for her performance, but her perform- IUCTT If STARTS . nCilLlVjr SUNDAY BUI WAS BOND? 0ueMren w f fOU'VE GOT IT I IN THE ATTIC1 In these days of priorities and shortages it Isn't Arising that Register-Guard Want Ads will quickly H lust about anything of any value. fes, Slrreel Chances are that your Income tax Is to Your attid You can quickly capture it by phoning 0 Wont Ad to 1200. "James Cagney seems to live the part of Cohan. Not until long after you've left the theater do you remember that he regularly used to give re peat performances (in different uniforms) as a brash young rookie feuding with Pat O'Brien." , Performance, supporting act ress: Teresa Wright in "Mrs. Miniver." We wrote that she was "little short of perfection" in her role, called her female find of the year. Performance, supporting actor: Van Heflin in "Johnny Eager." We drank our toast to Eric Port mann in "The Invaders." Picture: M-G-M for "Mrs. Miniver." We gave first choice to "King's Row," even after having written of the former: "Once in 10 years, perhaps, there comes a picture which merits the applause of the world. Such a picture is 'Mrs. Miniver,' a film for all ages and possibly for all the ages, be cause it stands high on the list of the greatest ever made for its hon esty and beauty and courage. Production, Irving O. Thalbergi Memorial award: Sidney Frank- i lin for "Random Harvest" and Mrs. Miniver." Our choice. From FF's Jan. 31 listing of awards: "His very M-G-M-ish sets made middle class English life more . luxurious than it is, but the pic-; ture's final Impression was that it had been propelled toward a goal of completeness in all other productive aspects." Direction: William Wyler for "Mrs. Miniver." Our top statu ette went to Sam Wood for "King's Row." j Best screen play: Arthur Wim-, peris, George Froeschel, James Hilton, and Claudine West forj "Mrs. Miniver." FF considered I it the best "original" screenplay! (since it was hardly the story of 1 the book) which "improved on the j original." i Best written screenplay: "The; Invaders," which was on our "ten ; best." Best original screenplay: "Wom an of the Year." This one had some clever spots, but the whimsy wore pretty thin when the scrip tists tried to solve the career woman problem and set Katha rine Hepburn to making waffles a la W. C. Fields. Documentary films: "The Bat tle of Midway" and "Moscow Strikes Back," (only two shown in Eugene) and two others. Both had a fierce patriotic impact. Black-and-white photography: "Mrs. Miniver." We thought that of "King's Row" far excelled. Technicolor photography: "The Black Swan." Color was arranged effectively for focus of attention, but seemed too garish in the main. Black-and-white art: "This Above AU." We forgot to notice the interior decoration on seeing how Hollywood had emasculated a book with a punch. . Technicolor art: "My Gal Sal. As we remember this sure-fire musical, Rita Hayworth was very well decorated in bustle and nape curls, and Victor Mature in tar and feathers. Best song: Irving Berlin for "White Christmas." We called this "nostalgically beautiful." knnur it I will be one of the few 1942 songs that wlU still be sung In 1952. Musical score: Max Steiner for "Now Voyager." The music for this had some bewitching themes, but for enforcing moods of drama was shoved into the background by the same composer's "In This Our Life" and Erich Wolfgang Korngolds "King's Row." Sound recording and musleal scoring: "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Hooray Editing: "Pride of the Yankees." In this category, we selected no award but said that this film had a "perfect ending." Beat cartoon: "Der Fuehrer's Face." ' The remaining Award-winning epics, we did not see. Which is our loss. During the year, and despite a quota of "Z" films, Hol lywood turned out a score of al most flawless pictures, collected profits in the millions despite loss of foreign markets. The war, during that time, cut into the tal ents, but stamped out some of the Hays offices namby-pambiness, and gave the industry opportunity for service both in education and entertainment to become a pow- erful and Indispensable weapon to level at the Axis. ; ' STAR SIGNS CINCINNATI, O., March 10 U.R) General Manager Warren C. Giles of the Cincinnati Reds Wed- nesday night had received a signed contract from Ray Starr, veteran 38-year-old pitcher. He was the 17th of the 30 squad members to sign. buCDfHntChLmS' CLARK TO QUIT RAMS PUEBLO, Colo, March 11 0JJ9 Earl "Dutch" Clark, coach of the Cleveland Rams professional football team, said today that ti- There's a straightforward, young look to tltis Anne Adams frock that's so perfect for busy days ahead.
