I Electri, "llS: Mrs. Freeland New Health Secretary Mrs. Leda Freeland has been ap pointed to the position of execu tive secretary of the Lane County Public Health association. It was announced Thursday by Clarence Simon, president of the group. Mrs. Freeland succeeds Mrs. Dor othy Brown, who recently resign ed because she is moving to Klam ath Falls to reside. She expects to leave for her new home Satur day. (URi The am bulances clanged through the dead-black streets of this town in the air raid danger zone last night with the wounded of the men who raided Dieppe. Stretcher bearers carried them through 20 feet of a dark corridor into the brightly lighted dressing room. It was a man's show. There were no women nurses. Preliminary treatment was ad ministered to the Rangers, the Canadians, the Commandos and the Fighting French and they were taken back to ambulances and on to base hospitals. Soon the walking cases began arriving, their uniforms bloody, in tatters, ugly ashes reddening their dirty faces, arms and legs. Some still gripped rifles and tom my guns. Some, wild looking, were suf fering from shock. Some hobbled, supported on each side by a first aid man. Many had lost the uni forms in which they had started out in the morning and had pieced together other clothing. They waited In the adjoining ward. Most eagerly reached for the cigarets handed out to them, iary circles and other local groups. She was in the office of the asso ciation in the courthouse Thurs day to become familiar with her duties before taking active charge. Happy days! Home made ice cream days! As the emergency ward was cleared, the surgeons came among the walking cases, looking for the men in most need of immediate care, and took them out. Beds and tables were all full now. Some men were on stretchers, crowded on the floor. The surgeons moved quietljt and expertly among them, admin istering a hypodermic injection of morphine here, giving sulfanili mide there, bandaging a wounded face, arm or leg.. The men took it in brave si lence. Occasionally there was a muttered curse. Only rarely was there a groan. Many sweated and gritted their teeth. A major knelt on the grounf and started a sort of prayer. "I don't see how in the name of hell I came through it," he said. His whole shoulder was man gled. A soldier was brought In with a thigh shot off. A handsome boy came In th door. He did not look as if any thing was wrong with him until he turned his head, revealing that the cheek which had been turned away, was shot entirely away. Another youth had been shot through both legs. He held his pistol as if it were his fortune. He was a Commando. He refused to get on the operating table. A sur geon came up and tried to dress his wounds as he stood. He shoved the surgeon away. The surgeon and attendants managed to take of Vs shirt. They reached out for his pistol. "Get away from that." he growled, ready to fight for it. They finally induced him to get on the table, but he clung to his pistol. : , An earthworm does not 'die If you cut it in two. Oregon Industrial Payroll Sets Record SALEM. Ore., Aug. 21 u Oregon's industrial payroll for the fiscal year ended July 1 hit an all-time high of $263,967,180. an increase of approximately $80,000. 000 over the figure for the corre sponding period last year, the state Industrial accident commission an nounced today. Multnomah county payrolls led the state with 49.72 per cent of the total; Marion county, 8.89 per cent; Lane county, 6.07 per cent: and Klamath county contributed 3.55 per cent of the state total. Night Schedule Planned For Sugar Rationing In order to serve canning-sugar users who cannot visit the ration ing headquarters in the daytime. a night schedule will be maintain-1 ed at the rationing office, 846 1 Olive street, every night during the coming week. Hours will be from 7 until 9 p. m. The nightly schedule will con tinue for one week only, but in ensuing weeks, as long as there Is a need for it, the office will be open one or two nights each week, Mr. Johnson said. Road Signs Point Out Dim-Out Zone Members of the Lane county road crew were busy Thursday posting warning signs along county roads in western Lane county west of the Eighth meridian call ing attention to the restricted- lighting, or dimout, order of the western defense command. State highway crews were en gaged in the same task along the state routes.
