ILi Jade was born Altha Lu cille Shoub, June 25, 1898 at Creswell, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James M. Shoub. She lived in Cell most of her life until four yean ago. when they moved to southern Califor nia. On June 25, 1921, she married Ralph W. Jack who with the fol lowing survive her: three sons; Robert, James and Donald, one daughter. Norma; three sisters, Mrs. Virgie Reynolds of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Grace Rose, Spring, field. Ore., and Mrs. Florence Lynn. Eugene. One brother, Mr. George Shoub of Westfir. Funeral services were held on August S from The Little Church of The Roses at Glenn Abbey Memorial Park in Chula Vista, California. Germans Claim U. S. The Wasp, a 14.700 ton carrier Springfield Wednesday Defense Drill Has Good Attendance SPRINGFIELD Some 2S0 to 300 civilian defense volunteers took part in the drill sessions held Wednesday night at the union high school grounds. Chief Air Raid Warden Paul Basford. who was ln charge of the drills, said Thursday that he was highly optimistic with the re sults of the mobilization which was held primarily to provide co ordinated instruction for the va rious volunteer corps. More such drills will very likely be held in the near future. War den Basford said. "There were, of course, a number of mistakes made in handling the problems Wednesday night," he said, "but I'm sure that everyone present learned something of value." Staggered-Hour System Working in Portland PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 13. fll.B Despite Seattle's unsatisfactory experience with the sUggered hour system of relieving trans portation congestion, the plan is working in Portland, according to Gordon G. Steele, traction com pany president Steele said that changing store hours to open at 10 a. m. and close at 8 p. m. had spread traction company peaks and had made it possible to divert 13 additional vehicles to the Oregon Shipbuild ing Corporation every morning.
