NEWS REPORTS FROM LANE COUNTY COMMUNITIES AND COUNTRYSIDE Two Cottage Grove Airplane Observers Have Served More Than 200 Hours Since War COTTAGE GROVE Three pr. i work either a two or three hour torn are still taking their regular watch at the post, who were on duty during the test practice held in October 1941. and have con sistently taken their watch since the observation post was establish ed Immediately following the at tack on Pearl Harbor. Miss Sybil Veatch is chief observer of the Cottage Grove post and Clarence Lone is assistant chief observer. Miss Veatch was on the first shift after Pearl Harbor and reported the first airplane observed. Two others, namely, Mrs. Frank Mc-; rullouzh itiil Mrs. Brishton Leon- ard were also on duty during the tests and on regular shifts since the war. Others who have taken regular shifts and been on duty consistenty since December t and are still on duty. Include George Foster, Vernon Booher. E. L. I wade, Mrs. Jeff Turner, victor Carlson, Frank Thompson, Mrs. Socco Scrlma, Mrs. Harry Tennis,: Mrs. Harley Gates, and Mrs. Glenn Flatters. L.D.Tucker ana miss Sibyl Veatch have each served , 231 hours. J. L. Plaster has serv v- q lit nuuil -iUl v-ini.iiiv l.ui'l j 35 hours. None of these have ever had a substitute for their shift. Mr. Tucker, Mr. Plaster and Mrs. Long received their arm bands in recognition of 100 hours service before May 17. Mrs. Wini fred Mosby works on both the Cottage Grove post and the Mos by Creek post. Madelyn Ocum paugh has worked three two-hour shifts weekly for the past five weeks. Other observers regularly Wolf Creek Club Does Red Cross Work WOLF CREEK. "Justamere Club" held their regular monthly meeting this week at the home of Mrs. Veola Farmer, with Mrs. Mae Hooker as joint hostess. The day was spent quilting for the club and working en articles for the Red Cross. A potluck lunch was served at neon. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest LIska, Nor vln, Darrel and Norma Jean LIs ka attended the wedding of Miss Melba Keeler at Veneta. Miss Keeler is a niece of Mrs. LIska. Mrs. Mae Hooker and Clifton have left for Coburg, where they will pick beans. School Remodeled Walter Robblns has been hired by the school board of district 105 to make extensive alterations on the school house, so that it will conform to state school require ments. New windows are being put in, the stage torn out to make more room and the blackboards are being moved to establish bet' ter vision for the pupils. This has necessitated our return to Hillside: no new experience, many of you know. Besides, he just naturally likes to move things. As I look at the assorted poles, I don't know whether they make the patch look rakishly debonair or in a state of Insanity. As I poled the beans, I pulled lambs quarter for the two little white pigs. It is a time-honored custom with us, to call the cur rent pig Susie. Two pigs pre sented a problem in christening which we seemed unable to meet. So far. thrv are simply referred to as The Susies. They have long white eyelashes and mezzo-soprano voices; mezzo when con tented, soprano when excited. They are the politest pigs I've ever known, and tonight I was all for bringing one of the infanta into the house as a source of en tertainment. But with only one ancestor from Ireland, we felt we did not rate a pig in the parlor. Tonight my hands are rough and stained past bleaching: my back aches and my shoes arc fuU of dirt; and I haven't been so happy aince the last time my hands were rough and my back ached. Could it be that I simply don't have it in me to be a lady? I must take time off, some day, and think it over. DAUGHTER IS BORN LYNX HOLLOW. An 8-pound baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dee LaCasse on August 9 at the McFarland maternity home in Cottage Grove. The baby has been named Jerry Merl. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burke and family, Twin Falls, Idaho, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown. Mrs. Burke is a sister of Mr. Brown. Mr. snd Mrs. Theodore Alen baugh of Capistrano. County Commissioner Allen Wheeler informed the meeting of the west Lane county chamber of commerce recently that the court planned to rock quite a bit of road In the western part of the county. The western Lane county fair will be held as usual in Septem ber, late in the month. I. J. Ross man, secretary, announced that OPA officers would be here later to meet with Florence businessmen. The date of meeting was not an nounced. Start Mill Site Fill Tuesday Martin Petersen moved his shovel and trucks from Depoe Bay to near Mapleton to make a fill at the proposed mill site. He will return to the Depoe Bsy Job as soon ss the fill is completed. Florence grade school is almost ready for the fall term. R. R. Herring, janitor, is doing the work. Cutting of bent grass here will begin the latter part of the week on the Wayne Waite farm. The small farm on the North Fork known as the Hubbard place and belonging to Kenneth Mc- I Cornack, was purchased recently by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Petersen of Florence. Mrs. Nyce hss been visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Lassen, the last two weeks while Mr. Nyc.' drove down recently. Miss Nellie Lombard Visits With Parents RIVER ROAD. Miss Nellie Lombard of Alhambra, Calif., is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Lom bard. Mr. and Mrs. Clark Hill and daughter of Vallejo, Calif., visited his mother, Mrs. Mary Hill, for a week. The River Road Women's club met for sewing at the clubhouse last week with defense chairman Mrs. A. E. Carruthers In charge. An informal discussion was held by the cooidlnators on defense in regard to a sugar rationing board and emergencies to be taken care of by the cooperation of lane and highway captains. Lane captains ore to call either Mrs. Earnest Moll or Mrs. Frank Sherman. The next meeting will be Sept 2. According to a decision of the circuit court, Hansen lane will be improved. An extensive summer play ground program has been carried on through the month of August with Geary Worth director. Indi vidual and small group games such as ping pong, croquet, horse shoes, decathlon and free play are played at any and all times. The program for afternoons and even ings are for class activities or large groups. Basketball can be played from 1 to 2 o'clock, li brary from 2 to S o'clock and from 3 to 4:30 wrestling and tumbling are given. The evenings, 7 to 8:30, softball.
