Clifford Stalsberg ind Robert Lemon, assisted by Laurence Mot fitt, led a group of 18 into the Three Sister Primitive Area over the week-end. Thirteen made the ascent to the top of the Middle Sister in four and one-half hours from Sunshine Shelter, including Clifford Stals berg, Gordon Gullion, Don Beards ley, Pierre Van Rysselberghe, Rob ert H. Lemon. Ken and Agnes Shetterly, Charles Roffe, Jane Hall, Marvin Olson, Laurence Mof fitt, and Jack McCracken. Two members, Reginald Macro and Bill Swarcutt, went to an elevation of 9000 feet and skied on Collier and Dillard glaciers. Marco thrilled the group by making a number of very difficult descensions of both Col lier and Dillard glaciers. His descent on Dillard glacier was act ually in the Eastern Oregon coun try. Marjorie Scobert, Adeline Adams, and Charles Adams went Into base camp at Sunshine and apent the day exploring various lakes and meadows at the base of the mountains. The climb was made under ideal conditions and the group enjoyed many slides on the descent. Visi bility was good, the group being able to pick out St. Helens, Hood, Jefferson, and Adams. On July 25 and 26 the Obsidians are sponsoring a climb of the South Sister which will be led by Joe Heldenrelch. The leader requests those Interested sign up by Wed nesday evening in order that prop- ' Daughter Of Eugene People Holds Down Man's Job At Airfield Rated as "typical of the mach anettes'' who are now doing men's jobs at Paine field, Wash ington, Is a former local girl. Hazel Brandt, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brandt of Eugene. Miss Brandt is among the first "girls in overalls" to arrive at Paine Field, to show that they ran hold down men's jobs, and do the work that will relieve soldiers. Says Hazel, who grew up on an 80-acre farm near Eugene, and who did do many little me chanical jobs at that time, "I guess I got the hang of machin ery then." Following her graduation from St. Mary's high school, and aft er the war broke out a few months later, Hazel wished to do something that would aid in the emergency. Girls were wanted at that time very badly to train for war work, and Ha zel signed up. Following a three - months basic training course as an elec trician's helper, at Portland's Benson Polytechnic school, she was sent to Paine Field to start work. Laws on Operators' Licenses Are Cited Al J. Peake, state examiner ef operators and chauffeurs license, reported recently that more care in the use of operator's licenses should be taken, and the closer ob servance of the state law regarding the use of the license would make work much simpler both for the operator and the examiner. The Oregon operators law states that all operators of vehicles in Oregon, even though they have the operator's license from another state, must have a valid Oregon license. To obtain the license, a test for vision a id over the la wa of this state must be given and passed, and satisfactory proof of driving ability shown by actual driving test. A person wishing to obtain the chauffeur's license must not only have the operator's permit but must have passed, also, the addi tional test on laws concerning chauffeuring. Also, the persons wishing the latter must have passed the operator'! teat within the last 12 months. "If additional Information Is wanted," Peake said, "persona may call at the city hall, room 9, and also get the new revised edition of the Oregon driver's manual there." artizc Paints Varnish Enamels LIGHTNING'S 11S1 Willamette Phone 1316 Defense Testimony Starts in Spy Case WASHINGTON, July 21.
