Springfield 500 Pickers Wanted To Sign For Bean Crop SPRINGFIELD With heavy picking slated to begin in about three weeks, the Springfield Bean Growers association, through their president, A. R. Cockerline, have announced that 500 more pickers will need to register before that time. Approximately 500 have already signed with the growers, but Mr. Cockerline urges that oth ers get In contact either with him at 20K21 or with Bernhard Fedde, attorney for the association. Mr. Cockerline also announced that the growers will not be able to furnish transportation to the pickers this year. Many fields have good camping grounds adja cent, he added, and persons who desire to do so can stay on the grounds throughout the harvest, thus avoiding the need for trans portation. Pickers this year will be paid a cent and three-quarters per pound with a bonus of a quarter cent for every pound, provided that the picker stays through the entire harvest, FROM SAN D1KGO SPRINGFIELD Meredith (Bud Watson and Mrs. Watson, son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. j James C. W From a small tin can that arrived in the United States from Russia not long ago came the symphonic story of the Soviet Union at war a story of bombs and shells and blood and death but with ulti mate victory its theme. It was at the western hemis phere premiere of Dmitri Shosta kovich's new seventh symphony, and Arturo Tosianim's baton led 110 members of the NBC sym phony orchestra to bring to the American radio audience the voice of its ally across the sea. For 73 minutes, the moving and majestic Ecore set down by the Kussian composer even as lie labored as a firefighter in besieged Leningrad was broadcast in this country and by shortwave to the world. The work portrayed a peaceful people beset by war, their mass ing to resist and, In its final move ments, signified victory with a rushing, martial theme. The applause of a distinguished studio audience was evidence tint Shostakovich, who said in a spe cial radiogram that "my music is my wcakon" had done his work well. Their acclaim, too. was for Tos canini's direction of the orches tra that played from photographic copien made from a microfilm of the original score brought here by airplane and motor car from Kuibyshev, Russia, in a tiny can. In his message to the western hemisphere audience, the com poser said his symphony was be ing played "on a day when freedom-loving nations are waging battle against the common enemy Hitler ism." "When I was working on the seventh symphony," he said, "my ihnnoMs upr, nf hatred for the enemy and love of people of the trials of progressive mankind and our coming victory. I wrote my symphony in my native city of Leningrad in those days when the enemy tore at the gates of this beautiful city." RAF Bombs Nazi Submarine Works LONDON, July 21. W Many squadrons of British fighters swept over France Monday after noon in swift follow up of an over night bombing of the German submarine works at Vegesack. Boston bombers also attacked a power station In northern France, it was said authorita tively. Vegesack Is 10 miles north west of Bremen. "Three of our bombers are missing from these operations," the air ministry said. The blow against northwest Germany was the fourth in as many days, having been preced ed by three daylisht smashes against the Ruhr and submarine construction centers at Luebeck and Flensburg. Approval of the conference com mittee's report came on a stand-: ing vote of 96 to S. The measure now goes back to the senate, where quick approval of the conference committee changes is expected. The action came after Rep. Tab- j er (R., N.Y.) declared that Hen derson, "in his estimates for money, called for absolutely ridic ulous set-ups. He has an abso lutely incompetent force, and he himself, I believe, is totally in competent. He believes in the crack-down policy of the NRA, rather than an appeal for pa-, triotic cooperation."
