Nearly all nations armored their tanks by means of the rivet meth od prior to the war, but the Battle of France demonstrated that shells particularly 75 MM projectiles, would shear the head from the rivet and then drive the body into the inside of the vehicle with the force of a bullet Casualties were heavy among tank personnel. "The rivets were forced through like someone spraying the inside of the tank with a shot-gun loaded with broken rivets," one officer said. First problem of ordnance offi cials was to design a tank to pro tect its crew from flying metal without weakening armor protec tion. A new rivet was designed that THE REGISTER-GUARD, EUGENE, OREGON Pag Hum. could not be blown into the Inside, but officials then learned that if armor plate was produced with beveled edges, sections could be welded together and make the tank a one-piece affair. The welded tank was found to be superior to those equipped with special rivets. Besides giving the tank greater over-all strength, no pieces of flying metal can pene trate the interior unless it pierces the thick armor plate. EVANGELIST SPEAKS ELMIRA, Oct. 21. The Golden Text was, "There is one God, and one mediator be tween God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time" (I Timothy 2:5,6) Among the citations which com prised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or dls. tress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or perll'or sword?" For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor tUngs present, nor things to eoma, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus oar Lord" (Rom. 8:35,38,38).
