Coach Eldon Fix has 11 letter
men back from last year's team
and will probably start an exper
ienced man at every position on
Saturday, September 27 when the
Millers entertain the
Braves in a Tri-County league
game.
The gloom that hit the Scrins-
field camp when big Don Coombs,
195-pound tackle, moved away
was short-lived when it was dis
covered that Coombs had moved
into a non-high school district and
was still able to attend the Miller
school.
Coombs Add Weight
With Coombs in the lineup the
Millers will crobabiv have th
biggest set of tackles in the league.
emmeu ttaucn will hold down the
other tackle position. He ties the
scales at an even 200 Bounds.
Both boys are lettermen.
The Springfield backfield will
be one of the fastest in the newly-
formed circuit with Wayne Sea
man at left half and Lee Todd at
fullbaek. Both boys were sprint
ers on the Springfield track team
which won the district champion-
snip ia spring. Vernon Hand
seems to have the inside track for
the blocking back position. Hand
is a 165-pounder who played right
half during the final games of last
season.
The right half position will be a
fight between Merle Nice, reserve
letterman last year. Earl Thlenes
and Barrel Stands ge. Thienes was
a nerve halfback last year and bat
shown plenty of kicking and
blocking ability in recent practice
sessions although he weighs only
145 pounds. Standage is a trans
fer from Los Angeles with two
years of Class B football exper
ience. He weighs 155 pounds.
The Millers are assured of a
dangerous passing attack with cap
able passers in both Seaman and
Todd, The receiving end of the
attack will be well taken care of
since both of last year's regular
ends are back.

Coach Clark Shaughnessy said
the scrimmage would be the last
of full-dress character until the
game. He had no comment en it,
as he was absent during the prac
tice. , While the varsity worked de
fensive, the reserves were de
ployed against the freshmen en
an adjoining field. Neither side
displayed much power on the of
fensive.
A shift in eositlen moved Leren
Laprade, 320-pound star center
of the WO trow, to nini guara.
Then he will share duties with
Jack Francis and Ed McCain,
men in line for these positions are
all lettermen they were not regu
lars last year. The right half
position and one of the tackle
positions are the only other posi
tions without regulars from last
year.
The blocking back position wss
weakened by the graduation of
Jerry Perdue, a Lane-Dsuglas all
star. Both regular guards are miss
ing due to the graduation of Allen
Kirk and the . absence of Lee
Brown, who dropped out of school.
Others lost were Ed Jordan, last
year's captain who was out with
injuries much of the season giving
Lee Todd plenty of experience at
the fullback post, John Keezer,
regular tackle, and Hal Thomp
son alternate at left half.
The Millers under the tutelage
of Fix and Paul Johnston, new

look like a team that may go
