The en trance hall on the building is all finished in knotty pine. Natural fir wood panels the corridor down the academic wing. Each room has its own clock, controlled from the office, and each room has its loud speaking unit, also controlled from the office. Each room Is painted in a dif ferent shade of color, providing some interesting designs in the wood finishes. Kitchen "Perfect" The home economics department would provide a dream kitchen for most homemakers. Fainted en tirely in ivory and cream shades, there are countless bullt-ins, four new electric ranges, an electric washing machine, a large refrige rator, an electric drying unit, and other electrical equipment for the girls' use. The linoleum is In sub dued white and black pattern. Sliding openings enable , the dishes to be passed into the adjoining cafeteria. Even the dishes to be used in the cafeteria match the ivory and beige shades of the woodwork. Pull length, windows with' Ve netian blinds matching the colors In the room provide adequate light from the north. On one side of the kitchen Is the sewing room, equipped with large cutting tables, numerous drawers for the girls to keep their sewing, full length mirrors, four sewing machines, and a closet to hang clothes being made- in the room. Just beyond the . kitchen is the cafeteria, which has ac cordion doors at one end that can be adjusted to double the size of the room which then can be used for assembly or a large banquet The science room has an ad joining smaller room for storage of supplies and for use as a dark room. Just off the library is the typ ing room, separated from the li brary by large double glass win dows with a large area of air space between the two thicknesses of glass as a means to drown out noise from the typing. Off one corner of the library is the book repair and storage room. The district conducts a complete I rental system, students being able to rent all their textbooks at a nominal xee. There are very few blackboards in the class rooms, but many bul letin boards. Down the corridor adjoining these rooms such fixtures as waste baskets are all recessed, allowing for freedom of movement in all parts of the corridor. Gymnasium Interesting The gymnasium is one of the most interesting parts of the buildine. being finished with the walls in knotty pine the boards being horizontally placed to door height; the bleachers and floors in maple. The big beams extend ing across the 20-foot ceiling have the knotty pine surface. The gym nasium floor is 90 by 60. The stage is at the south end of the. gym nasium. The curtains are arranged from rubber wheels that roll along channel like fixtures, thus allow ing them to be moved freely and without noise. The stage has a complete dimmer system, has its own footugnt . system, ana is eaulDned for a microphone. Dress ing rooms are off either end of the stage. Off the west side of the gym nasium are the dressing rooms and showers for both boys and girls. There are seven showers in each unit and complete lavatory fa' cilltles. Also, there is u storage room for towels, and a drying room where uniforms and other equipment can be cared for. The gymnasium has its own en trance from the front, and exits from the dressing departments off the west side to the athletic neia. Beneath the stage is storage space for Wrestling mats and other gymnastic equipment. The heating room is between the gymnasium and the boys' shop in the top of the T part of the build ing. The edifice is steam heated, Until the REA is set up in the upper McKenzie. lighting Is done by a portable Diesel plant. Shop Convenient To the boys, , the work shop is as perfect as the Home economics rooms are to the girls. In this unit of the building there is a small storage room to be equipped with wall racks, a drawing room, a paint room with spraying closet, a small room to store metal equip ment, and the main large 'work room.- Lighting is stressed, here. too, through large windows. The doors leading off the room- to the outside are large enough to allow an automobile to drive in for the auto mechanical work. The shop has metal lathes. - In a little niche - in one corner of the drawing room is the office of the Instructor. Walls between all departments in the shop are separated by windows, and from his little off ice,-with glass around three sides and an opening on the fourth, the Instructor can see what is going on in all departments. Already, before school opens, there are 38 beginners doing or chestra practice, music to be one of the programs of work and in terest for the children. The first six grades of the former McKenzie Bridge, Blue River, and Vida districts are housed in the grade school build ing in Blue River,, the upper six grades to use the new structure. Thomas B.
