PageTen. THE REGISTER. GUARD, EUGENE, OREGON Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce Meets and Plans For South Lane County fair COTTAGE GROVE, Aug. IS (Special) The chamber of com merce met Tuesday noon at the Rainbow cafe for a luncheon and business meeting. The fair board gave its report, stating that there Will be over 100 prizes totaling over $150 offered at the Southern Lane county fair, August 22-23. Friday evening, the first day of the fair, there will be a picnic supper sponsored by the chamber, held in the city park. The supper will be held at 6 o'clock and the chamber will furnish free coffee and ice-cream. Following the sup per they will sponsor a free soft ball game between Quality Mar ket and Knickerbockers. Saturday at 10 o'clock the annual pet parade will be held. The parade will form at the city park. All entries must be made by 9:30 a. m. Over 37 prizes totaling over $75 will be offered for the parade. Reverend J. Burns, H. B. Ferrin and Harold Sprague are in charge of arrange ments for the pet parade. Satur day evening the American Legion is sponsoring a home talent carni val and dance at the armory. Townsend Club Meets The Townsend club met Monday evening for a social meeting. Read ings were given by Mrs. Anna Petrie, Mrs. L. D. Tucker and Mrs. Nellie Blackmore. Ed Finnerty and Al Griffin gave several duets on their trumpets. They were ac companied by Mrs. Nellis Black more. W. E. Parrish and Mr. Fegles of Eugene were guests. Mr. Parrish gave a resume of the Na tional convention which he re cently attended at Buffalo, New York. There will be quilting Thursday afternoon. The Sunshine Circle of the Wo man's Council of the Christian church held an all day quilting Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Mar vin Frury. The group will quilt again next Tuesday at the Drury home. Family Reunion Held The family reunion of Jake and Mary Allen was held Sunday at the city park. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Harrel and son, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Walton and son. There was some discussion of road funds and of a delegation to meet with the county budget committee, but as no committees were present, no action could be taken on the va rious subjects brought up. George Johnson, president of the Western Lane County association came in late and made the announcement that plans for the fair were work ing out favorably and that the pre mium list was out. Allen Wheeler, county commissioner, was present. Rev. Mr, Webber, of Alhambra, Cal arrived in Florence Tuesday evening. His family is in Eugene for a few days and the minister is already at work on his summer home, cleaning it up before the family comes down. Bethel People Home From Extended Trip BETHEL, Aug. 13 (Special) Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Kingsley and daughters, Olive Field and Mar jorie Kingsley, left June 7 and have just recently returned to their homes in Eugene. They traveled a distance ' of 10,000 miles, going south to Los Angeles, then east to Boulder Dam, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, and Painted Desert and as far east as Chicago. On their return they visited historical mining towns near Den ver and drove to the summit of Pike's Peak, also saw the Royal Gorge and the black canyon of the Gunnison, then drove north to Yellowstone national park and the Grand Coulee dam, returning home by way of the Bridge of the Gods, Bonneville dam and the Columbia gorge. Miss Betty Hill and Walter Haxby were married Sunday eve ning at Reno, Nev.- They were accompanied by Mr. and . Mrs. George Sousa of Sacramento. After spending a few days at Sacramento, Mr. and Mrs. Haxby will return to Eugene.. Dale Olson, Jr. of Marshfield, Ore., is visiting at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Harold Anderson. locality, visited Monday with local families. Ruby Schultx returned Saturday from- Salem. She was called there by the death of her grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. Monteeth Williams, of Bradwood, and daughters are visiting relatives in Dexter and Trent Mr. and Mrs, Hank Brandley of Portland were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Murphy. They all went fishing at the coast on Sunday. ; Lowell Grade School To Open Sept. 15 LOWELL, Aug. 13 (Special) Allan Cox is building a dwell ing north of tne railroad, in Lowell. Mr. Cox is an uncle of Charlie Cox, the postmaster, and had re cently come here from California. Floyd Mauney has recently moved to the first house west of the flume on the north side of the Willamette highway in Dexter. The grade school will open September 15 with the following staff of teachers: Miss Lois Dix, first grade: Mrs. Annette Baug nss, second; Mrs. Margaret Gray, third: Miss Dorothy Reiss, fourth; Mrs. Nordelle Wilder, fifth; Mr. Floyd Mauney, sixth; Miss Capi- tola Kroenlein. seventh: Mr. Ross Graham, eighth. Miss Reiss is to be the music teacher and is plann ing on having a school band, if arrangements can be made to ob tain instruments. Mr. Walker, state fire warden, will show a picture "Trees and Homes," at the meeting of the Lowell grange Thursday, August 14. This will be a sound picture In technicolor. Walterville Ladies' Aid Meets Thursday WALTERVILLE, Aug. 13 (Special) The Walterville ladies' aid society will, meet all day Thursday at the social room of the church for the regular day of quilting. The business meeting will be held in the afternoon at two o'clock. The quilt in the frames is to be finished that day and another one put in. Quilts which are to be done by this aid this winter should be listed so they will be quilting in turn. Bean pickers around Walterville are starting picking in the LeVee yard. Work began Monday. Mrs. John Conley spent Monday in Eugene. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Page and Mrs. Elizabeth Page were Eugene shoppers Monday. Walterville grange will hold Its regular meeting next Tuesday evening at the hall for regular and general work. Two more meet ings will be held before the Lane County fair and arrangements and plans are being made for the Grange booth. N Threshing Under Way Around Thurston THURSTON. Aug. 13 (Spe cial) Threshing is in full swine in tne Tnurston district and fields are being cleared rapidly of the stacked grain and also of tne shocks which are standing in some fields. Combining is also being done this week as the weather permits. NEWS OF GOSHEN GOSHEN, Aug. 13 (Special) Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Trinka have returned home from a trip to North Dakota where they visited Mrs. Trinka's mother and other relatives. . . x . Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mathews have gone to Paisley to spend two months, hoping tne higher altitude will benefit Mr. Mathews' health. They expect to stay for deer hunt ing. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Goodlow, who were living here for two weeks in their trailer house at the W. L. Winter farm, have left for Myrtle Creek. Mr. Goodlow Is a regular bridge carpenter for the Southern Pacific Co. but while here helped re-shingle the section house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. George Waske. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Tucker and family have moved to Empire where Mr. Tucker is employed in a sawmill. Mrs. A. C. Aikins accompanied Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Rose, their daughter, Nancy, and son, Bill, on a trip to Medford and Yreka, Cal. At Medford they visited the William von de Hellerf home and at Yreka the Hugo von de Hellen home. They are the father and brother of Mrs. Rose. Harrisburg Men On Long Auto Tour HARRISBURG. Aug. 12. c..,i.n Arnold Sittser. Davie Lee Bnd Gary Piper, Neil Defi and Charles Quimby returned Sunday from a week's attendance at the educational camp at Tur ner, sponsored by the mens "Ninety and Nine" organization. Frank uempsey ana mcA El liott started Thursday on an au tomobile tour which will include the ereat dams in the western states. They went first to Bonneville and Grand Coulee, men planned a short stop at Rainier national park, and from there the trip will include as many other dams as the time will allow. They expect to be gone about ten days. Walter Chastain returned home Saturday from the Deaconess hospital in Salem where he un derwent an operation. Mrs. H. M. Stevenson, Mary Jeff ryes. Clifford Price, and Larch Ellenberg went to Port land, Sunday. There they were met by Captain Stevenson, and by Jeanne Jeffryes. The latter returned to Harrisburg with the group in the evening. Flax De-Seeded The Harrisburg flax plant put out its first load of de-seeded product last Thursday. Some trouble was experienced in get ting the machine for this part of the process. As the deseeding is the first operation, the flax which has been coming in for more than a week, has been piled in two large sheds and many tons staek ari nntsiHe. Three of the build ings are completed, one is in the making and several others are wl tn be built. Besides the car penters, there are about a dozen men empioyea in me hhx prw:- essing. .. . . , . Mrs. Grace Darling entertained at a swimming party Friday eve ning on the island. Present were about . fifteen members of the Wesley Foundation of the Meth odist church in Eueene. Rev. A. Vosner. rjastor of the Harrisburg Methodist church, the Misses Clarene Spurlin, Grace and Laura Darling and Preston Darling. Mrs. Elmer Wadsworth, man ager of the local teleohone office, is taking a two weeks' vacation at Newport. She is accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Jones of Jefferson. Mr. and Mrs. James Coate of Portland and Mr. and Mrs. .Tarrs Harrold of Washington, D. C, visited Sunday with the Lester Coate familv. They all made a trip to the Fern Ridge dam. Mr. Harrold is an army engineer from the army department at Wash ington and Is out in the west on business. E. W. Blehm. Mrs. T). G. Clark, Connie Stone, Marv Lou Stroda, Margaret Hayworth and Frank Huston SDent Sunday at Otter Rock with Mrs. Blehm and Mary belle. Marv Lou remained for a week's visit, and Marv Anna Lowell, who had been there for a week, returned with the party. Roy Overgard Breaks Ribs In Accident SANTA CLARA, Aug. 13 (Spe cial) Roy Overgard suffered sev eral broken ribs and many bruises and scratches when his tractor ran over him. He is improving slow ly. Mr. 8nd Mrs. Will Lockyear and sons have moved from the Reed home east of the Santa Clara school to 1914 East Seventeenth avenue in Eugene, where they have purchased a home. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Walton have as their house guest Mrs, Clarabell Mills of Portland. Mrs. Mills will visit for several weeks and then go to California where she will make her home for a year. Mrs. F. H. Andrews of Portland has been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs, E. C. Hart and other old friends. Mrs. Andrews and family lived in Santa Clara sev eral years ago.
