From Moscow Mr. and Mrs. Donald Forrester and daughter Jean of Moscow, Ida., made a brief visit with Mr. Forrester's uncle, Williams Forrester, Monday. Mr. Forester is on the faculty of the University of Idaho. Huge Rhubarb Found From Swisshome comes a chal lenge regarding a large rhubarb plant. Mrs. W. B. Dutcher of that community reports a rhubarb leaf in her garden measures 38 inches across and 32 inches in length. Move Residence Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kehoe and daughter, Mildred, and Mrs. A. M. Mojave Desert Range Is Completed Out in the great spaces of the Mojave desert, 37 miles north of Barstow and 25 miles from the nearest railroad, workmen put the finishing touches on the remain ing igloo-type magazine last week, laid down their tools and pro nounced the U. S. army's newest anti-aircraft firing range one hun dred per cent complete, the zone constructing quartermaster at San Francisco has announced. Built at a total cost of $579,973, the Mojave desert anti-aircraft firing range consists of 35 tem porary buildings and 462 tents, designed to house one full coast artillery anti-aircraft regiment al ternately from Camp Haan, eighty miles away. Work on the range was started February 20. High wind and a record-breaking rainfall in March and April slowed down construc tion, labor turn-over was consid erable and the roads to Barstow were kept open for traffic with great difficulty. The arid desert is covered with a few inches of lava dust over a hard pan, and except for a few months in the winter there is no rain. Nevertheless, a well was sunk 524 feet beneath the desert floor, a huge underground lake was dis covered, and sufficient water was pumped up to supply two thous and men. The well now has a capacity of 225 gallons a minute and is being supplemented by an other. Power from a portable diesel engine set up near the center of the camp operated the saws, post diggers, welding machines and other power-driven tools until the California-Nevada Electric cor poration could string lines from Barstow across two low mountain ranees and thirty miles of desert. Temperatures on the desert run up to 120 degrees in the day and drop as much as lifty points dur ing the night. This, with the wind and sand, often make the range a little less comfortable than the front parlor back home.
