Marvel, who is a student at Oregon State college, three sisters, Lonona, Lucille and Patsy Lou. At the present time Miss Geer is living in Cottage Grove and Is employed at Gustaf son's Super Creamed store. She was graduated from the Cottage Grove union high school with the class of 1940. For the past year she has been a student atySacra mento Junior college. She plans to return there next year after which she will attend Oregon State college. She is president of the Theta Epsilon sorority, vice president of the Romaine Rownie sorority, member of the student body council and on the rally com mittee. At the last counting of the ballots Miss Betty Jones had 80,000 votes; Miss Lillian Geer, 87,000 and Miss Betty Chapman, 86,000 votes. The contest closes at midnight July 16. ' Harrisburg Youth Killed In Glendale HARRISBURG, July 12. (Spe cial) Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Fry re ceived a telegram telling of the death of their son, John, at Glen dale, Cal., Friday morning. John was a private with the air corps and was fatally injured when struck by an automobile while crossing the street in Glendale on Wednesday. His companion was killed instantly. Funeral arrange ments have not yet been made. Mrs. Harry Lutz and children have moved from the Stevenson apartments to Junction City. Lyman Pence has returned to his work in an airplane factory at Los Angeles after spending a week's vacation at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pence. John Cooper, an employe of the Highway garage, accom panied him to Los Angeles, and will take a six weeks' course in an airplane school. A. L. McAfee is making altera tions in the west section of his store building. T. W. Sommer villa Is doing the carpenter work. The rooms will have a new occu pant about the first of next month. Faint Jobs Listed Two more new paint jobs have been done this week. The A. J. Jacobs residence received a new coat of white paint. At the city hall the main building, the wood shed and the hose tower were also painted white, alterations inside the hall were made and a new electric range added to the kit chen to replace the old electric plate. Miss. Helen Darling who was home on a short vacation from Salem, fell from a cherry tree Monday and injured her back. A limb eight or 10 feet from the ground failed to support her. Mrs. Frances Platts of Portland, a former Harrisburg resident, was a recent guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Starr. Glenn Yoder, son of Rev. and Mrs. John Voder, returned to his home Monday of this week after an emergency appendectomy at the sacred Heart hospital in Eugene, a week ago last Sunday. Seventeen members of Three Link Rebekah lodge attended the program and ceremonies of Ever green Rebekah lodge's fiftieth an niversary at Junction City Tues day night. RESIDENT CHANGES LISTED BELLFOUNTAIN, July 12. (Special) Mr. and Mrs. Harold Larkin and sons, Richard and Connie Ray of Alpine have pur chased the M. M. Waltz place east ol Belliountain which was owned by the Waltz brothers. They plan to move this fall from the Ted Ball place in Alpine to their new farm which is now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith and family who will move to their home (formerly the A. H. Buck- ingnam place) about a half mile south of Bellfountain. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sankey and children Stella and Junior moved this past week from the Chria tiance house in Bellfountain to their newly purchased home near Alpine, which was formerly owned by Dell peek. Mr. and Mrs. Harris and family have recently moved from the Ira Malcom house at Dawson to the George Humphrey bungalow north of Bellfountain. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hull have left for the east where they are purchasing a new car and will drive it home. Mrs. J. J. Lamb entertained recently at a surprise birthday dinner, in honor of Mr. Lamb's birthday anniversary. Among those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Clem and daughter Mar garet of Albany and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamb of Suver. Mrs. Clem and Mr. Lamb are sister and brother of J. J. Lamb of this com munity and all are former resi dents. Also Miss Audra and Miss Myrth Lamb of Corvallis, daugh ters of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Lamb, attended the reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Hermon Edwards of Alberta, Canada, were Bell fountain' callers this week. Mr. Edwards ls a son of the late L. N. Edwards and grew to manhood on the family farm southeast of Bell fountain, which is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Haynes and sons. This was their first visit to the Bellfountain community for a number of years. IN LYNX HOLLOW LYNX HOLLOW, July 12 (Spe cial) A no-hostess meeting of the Lynx Hollow Community club will be held at the school house on the afternoon of July 16, everyone to bring her own work. Mr. and Mrs. Seikler of the University of California arrived recently to spend the summer at their ranch in Lynx Hollow, U. S.O. Mr. and Mrs. Loy Barker and Jerry of Chiloquin came Friday to spend the week-end with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Barker. Mrs. Lee Barker, who fell and broke her wrist and hurt her hip, is recovering nicely. Feelyi Sell Store Mrs. George Feely will leave soon for Aloha, where Mr. Feely has purchased a gas station and store. The Feelys sold their cafe here, and have made arrangements to turn their residential property back to Elmer Newton, from whom they purchased it. Mrs. Laura Coons has had as her euests recently, her neohew, Worth Schubert and wife, of North Platte. Nebr., and the latter's sis ter. Mrs. Kutherine Preest of St. Petersburg Florida, and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Preckel and sons. David and Melvin, Mrs. Preckel is a Brandniece of Mrs. Laura Coons. The visitors also stopped to see othr relatives. Mrs. W. G. Cool, Bill and Mar tha Jane, Mrs. Ida Simmons. Mrs. Jack Randall and children, Jimmy and Vanda Jane, left recently on a trip to Nashville. Tenn.. to visit their neohew, Oscar Goodwin. They will be gone several weeks, and Mrs. Anna Witty will have charge of Ida's grocery during her absence. The Methodist church ls spon soring a picnic at Boswell springs Friday afternoon. The program includes sports at 2:30 and a bas ket lunch at 9:30. Mr. and Mrs. George Kesterson received word of the birth of a eranddaughter, July 8 at Corvallis. The baby's Barents are Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Frost. Jim Damewood and sister of Los Angeles, Calif., are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Dame wood this week. Jim is in the air corps department, and is on a week's furlough. Mr. and Mrs. George Veair and George Veair of San Francisco, Calif, spent a week with the Don Brown and Vance Howe families. They also visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Knoles, accompanied by Mrs. Vance Howe and Billy Howe. Mr. and Mrs. Knoles live at Eula. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Clark of Red ondo Beach left for home Friday after two days visit with the El bert Cox family. Mrs. George Elias' brother, Sam Wheeler, visited one day with her; he came from King City, Calif, and left with his company for Fort Lewis, Wash, At Pleasant Hill PLEASANT HILL. July 12. (Special) John Hammitt, who broke a leg recently, while work ing in Eugene, has returned to his home from the hospital. Mrs. P. T. Skogsett and family Lawrence and Louella of Vancou ver, Wash, have returned to their home after a week's visit with her mother Mrs. L. E. Parker, of Clo verdale. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil E. Statzer and daughter Laurell of Pullman, Wash., have been visiting with the T. H. Parks family. Mrs. Harry Claussen and boys, Henry and Max of Salem have re turned to the home after a week's visit with her parents here, Mr. and Mrs. John Hammitt. Miss Nancy Barnum is attend ing summer school at the Univer sity of Oregon. She will be on the teaching staff at Bethel this fall. Club Meets The Pleasant Hill club women met the past week at the home of Mrs. Allen Wheeler. Mr. and Mrs. York Moore and son Junior have gone to Bend for a few days visit with relatives. Santa Clara Grange's Picnic Today; Other Subordinate Groups Announce Activities CANTA CLARA Santa Clara grange members will meet in regular session at the school gym nasium Tuesday evening, July 15. Mrs. W. V. Chapman, H. E. chair man, has engaged Phil Bartholo mew, of Springfield, to put on the program, which will consist of moving pictures In technicolors, taken in Hawaii. The program will be given preceding grange at 8 o'clock. The public is invited. The next regular session of the H. E. club will be held at the Archie St. Clair home Friday, July 18. The afternoon will be spent quilt ing. The grange picnic is Sunday, July 13, at Skinner Butte park. A potluck dinner will be held at 12:30. The committee in charge is Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Baldwin and Mr. and Mrs. Hinshaw. Mohawk -McKenzle Mohawk McKenzie grange members will not meet at the grange hall Wed nesday evening, but instead have been invited to a weiner roast and potluck supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Meyers. Sup per will be at 7 p. m. Franklin All ladies of the H. E. c. are asked to come next Tuesday, July 15, for an all-day meeting, each to bring rakes, etc., for outdoor clean-up; also thim bles and scissors so work can be done on quilts. A potluck lunch will be served. . Franklin grange met Wednes day evening with 15 members present. A library program was conducted by Mrs. Bailey and con sisted of roll call on "What this flag means to me." Contests of questions and answers were led by Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Bryant. All those taking part in the ro dent contest are asked to bring their rodent tails to the next reg ular meeting. Crow Crow grange will meet for the regular meeting Wednes day, July 16. Central Central grange met last week. Rejorts were made by the legislative committee, also by the delegates to the state grange. Ralph Petzold and Theron Swan son, Y. G. A. members who at tended state grange, gave short reports. The grange voted 100 per cent in favor, of the Pennsyl vania plan. A short program was given by the Y. G. A's. Lorane Lorane grange held a regular meeting this week with 21 members present. The H. E. club chairman, Mrs. C. G. Smith, announced a club meeting will be held Tuesday, July 15, at the home of Mrs. Ida KragenbrlnK. cnariie Mitchell was appointed to report to the sawmill workers' union con cerning rent of the hall. It was also voted to rent the grange kit chen to the union for an ice cream supper. After grange seating drills were practiced, refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Ash-, ley, J. M. CRESWELL At the regular meeting of Creswell grange Thurs day evening Mrs. F. L. DeBerry, lecturer, presented a patriotic pro gram, reading the American creed as an opening number. All sang "America the Beautiful." The preamble to the constitution of the United States was repeated in uni son. This was followed by a quizz on American history. Mrs. E. J. Hengelbrok read on American privileges and Mrs; Clara Doty told of the duties of citizens of our country. Mrs. E. F. Roberts gave the history of the flag. A poem was read by Mrs. John Napper. History of the national anthem was given by Frankie Vick. Mrs. DeBerry gave rules for the salute to the flag and all joined in a closing song. Harold Parks presided at the business meeting. Mrs. Frances Treadwell was elected to mem bership by demit from the Sher wood grange. An application for membership by initiation was also presented. The. Home Economics club suggested that the grange hall yard be cleared of grass and it was voted to hire the work done. The next meeting of the club was announced for July 21 at the hall. Mrs. David Francis told of. the new year books of the club and read the objectives for the year. Elmira News ELMIRA, July . 12. The Aug. 14 meeting was announced to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Grousbeck following a picnic supper. The quarterly report gave the present membership of 82 with a gain of B over last report. Mr. Francis drew the lucky number in the penny drill for the bouquet of flowers for the evening. Elbert DeMoss of the Willakenzle grange was a vis itor and gave a talk relative to the work of the band and solicited transportation for the band to the Eugene Farmers' Creamery picnic Sunday at Swimmers' Delight re sort. Cars will leave the hall at 10:30 a. m. Elmira Elmira H. E. Club met at the hall the past week for an all day meeting and finished work on a charity quilt. A pot-luck luncheon was served at noon. Vis itors were George Blanchard, Les ter Allen and Giles Phelps at lunch. The juvenile matron Ce cile Carlile, held a meeting for the juveniles in the hall that day. Bessie Christopher and Grace Whiting were initiated into the juvenile group as honorary mem bers. Myrtle Allen and Austin Christopher received, their initia tion as honorary juveniles at state grange sessions in Newport.' A business meeting of H.E.C. was presided over by chairman Ila Shields in the afternoon at which time members discussed plans for the community Fair, also the Lane county fair, to be held in Septem ber. Committees were appointed for the various exhibits, with in structions to decide whether to give merchandise prizes instead of the ribbons which have been given in the past. It was also, decided to ask the grange to set a date for a shingling bee, at which time the quarterly birthday dinner will be held, also a miscellaneous shower for Mrs. Guy Deedon, who was Hazel Christopher before her marriage June 28. The club de cided to make two crib quilts for Doernbecher hospital this month. Members discussed having a ba zaar at the community fair, and volunteered making small articles to sell at that time. At the next meeting, July 22, the grounds will be cleaned of. all fire hazards. thereby earning a $3.50 premium offered the Home Economic Clubs throughout the state. Vaughn News . VAUGHN, July 12. (Special) Mr. and Mrs. Earl Johnson in company with Mr. arid Mrs. Will Johnson and son of Wendling have returned to their home at Vaughn after spending a week visiting in Spokane and seeing eastern Ore. gon and Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bosshardt and Larry Johnson cared for the Johnson dairy in their absence. Mrs. Blanche Passmore and son, Clair, of Aberdeen, Wash., visited here a few days with the Paul Bosshardt family (Mrs. Passmore is a sister of Mr. Bosshardt). Betty Bosshardt accompanied her aunt and cousin on a trip to the. Oregon Caves, going as far south as Cres cent City. Cal. .. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ritter and son, Earl, have left for a week's trip to northern points, as lar as Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Marshal have been having as house guests Mrs. Marshal's sister and family from Idaho, also a niece, Miss Shirley Closner, from Idaho, and Mrs. Marshal's brother, John Clos ner, and wife from Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snellstrom, Jr., and son, Roger, visited in Cali fornia recently and . Miss Nila Neighswander, a cousin of Mrs. Snellstrom, returned here with them for a visit. Ice Cream Social Set For Thursday WESTFIR, July 12 (Special) Westflr Welfare circle is spon soring an ice cream social at the show hall on Thursday afternoon and evening, beginning at 3 p. m. Ice cream will be sold in cartons, also, and Sundaes will be featur ed as well as ice cold punch and cake. A good attendance is re quested as the proceeds will go to buy dishes for the community church kitchen. A group of friends of Mrs. Earl Blelle enjoyed a picnic supper at Shady Dell In honor of Mrs. Ble ile's birthday on Thursday even ing. Singing and readings were en joyed during the early evening. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bleile and children Harry, Earl and George, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Cummings, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. T. A King, Mrs. Howard King and daughter Mary of Bend, Mr. and Mrs. A. Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Rehwalt and son Danny. Mrs. Bleile received a shower of hand kerchiefs from those present. The Stitch and Chatter club met last week at the home of Mrs. Wallace Wetzel. The after noon was spent sewing and visit ing. Refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clark and daughter Beverly of Susanville, Cal., were visitors of Mrs. Clark's parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Cook, recently. Jack Vassey and J. L. Fisher and Donnas Levenhagen left for the U. S. army duty recently. Mr. and Mrs. Burtchel Luding- ton and children Connie Jean and Delmer spent a few days in Ala meda, Cal., in company with Mr. Ludington's mother, who remain ed for a .visit with her daughter in the southern city. Mr. and Mrs. R. Wagner are new residents of Westfir having moved recently from Salem. Mrs. Wagner will be remembered as Geraldine Loose. FLORENCE, July 12 (Special) Members of the city council visited several possible sources of water supply for the city last week. The city Is beginning to out grow the present source. Board members of the grade school met recently to plan an other budget for the coming school year. A flue fire at the BicC ice cream parlor caused some excite ment last week, but was soon ex tinguished. State license examiners were In town Friday. Quite a number applied for licenses, but most of them were applications lor first license. They will be in town again July 25. After the fire drill this week, H. T. Gillson, state deputy fire marshal, gave a talk. He com plimented the local boys on their efficiency. On Saturday, July 19 the Sius law Pioneers will meet at the North Fork grange hall for their annual meeting. Everybody is ex pected to bring their basket din ner, and dishes. Cream, sugar and coffee will be furnished. A pro gram has been arranged for the afternoon. Members of the I. O. O. F. plan on going once more to cut brush along the road to the I. O. O. F, cemetery. LOST VALLEY NEWS LOST VALLEY, July 12 (Spe cial) Mr. and Mrs. Ted Marshall are the parents of twin boys. The twins have been named Ray and Roy. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Jepsen are the parents of a baby boy born July 3. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Riggs are moving to Dorena this week-end where Mr. Riggs is employed. The church gave a farewell party for them Saturday night at Zion. A church picnic will be held July 19 at the Dolly Varden picnic ground on Fall Creek.
