World Champ Jim Londos Meets
Walt Achiu in Thursday Match
Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, June 28 OP)
As has been their habit recently,
the New York Yankees won a ball
game today, and this is what hap
pened:
Joe DiMaggio clouted a double
and a single, marking the 40th
straight game In which be has hit
safely and leaving him just one
away from the modern major
league mark George Sisler set
back in 1922.
The Yankees climbed into first
place in the American league by
a margin of six percentage points
as the Cleveland Indians lost to
the Chicago White Sox.
Charley Keller hit his 15th hom
er of the year, boosting to 23
games in a row the major league
record in which one or another
Yank has walloped at least one
four bagger.
Oh, yes the score of the ball
game was 7 to 4, with the Ath
letics serving as the Yankees victims.
The actual deciding run, that
counted in the sixth, was produc
ed on Bill Dickey's triple and Phil
Ruzzuto's single.
Rookie Stars for Chicago
Two home runs fro mthe usual
ly anemic bat of Don Kolloway
plunged the Cleveland Indians
back into- second place in the
American league in a game at
Cleveland.
The rookie second-baseman
staged a one-man show to lead
his Chicago mates to an uphill 6-to-4
triumph over the Indians be
fore 13,000 ladies' day customers.
He not only hit two circuit drives,
but also got a single and stole four
bases including home In the
ninth for Chicago's sixth run.
George Mcuuinn belted a tre
mendous two-run homer in the
tenth inning at Detroit to give the
St. Louis Browns a 3-to-l victory
over the Detroit Tigers after'Bu'ck
Newsom had wild-pitched the ty
ing run home in the ninth.
It was the. well-paid News om's
11th setback ot the season against
five victories.
McQuinn's drive with Relief
Pitcher Jack Kramer on base
struck the third deck in right field
for what park officials said was
the fourth longest homer ever nit
into that sector. Newsom, who
yielded one hit over the first sev
en innings, permitted Chet Laabs
to score from third on the wild
pitch with two out in the ninth.
Dodgers Drop Full Game Behind
Pinky Higgins' single that fol
lowed two passes off starter John
ny Niggeling in the fourth gave
Detroit what seemingly was the
winning run in a mound duel. But
Newsom, who faltered last time
out against the New York Yankees
with but one batter to retire, again
was unable to put down the up
rising.
Bill Zuber. heretofore a relief
hurler, pitched Washington to a
3-to- victory over the Boston Red
Sox on the home lit with the able
support of the Washington Infield,
credited with five double piays.
The Brooklyn Dodgers and their
high-priced pitching specialist,
Kirby Higbe, ran out of gas at
the same time in Boston today,
dropped a ball game to the Braves
and sank a full game out of the
National league lead.
'Bama Rowell caught hold of
one of Higbe's slants with a mate
on base in the sixth inning, knock
ed it out of the park and enabled
the Braves to come from behind
to take a 3-2 decision, ending both
Brooklyn's six-game winning
streak and Higbe's four-game vic
tory run.
Stan Benjamin scratched a single
to the box with two on and two
out in the 12th inning in New
York to send a home run home
and give the Phillies a 3-to-2
overtime victory over the Giants.
The Cincinnati game at St.
Louis was postponed because of
rain.
The Pittsburgh Pirates' inner
defense approached two major
league records for activity today,
but cracked on- two critical plays
that allowed the Chicago Cubs a
3-to-2 victory. .

NEW YORK, June 28 P)
Long Ted Williams of the Boston
Red Sox still is setting opposing
pitchers frantic. His batting ave
rage today was .411, far and
away the best in the major
leagues.
Pete ' Reiser of the Brooklyn
Dodgers continued to lead the
National league with .356, but
there were no fewer than five
batters in the American league
above this figure.
The week's important hitting
development in the latter circuit
was the spurt of Roy Cullenbine
of the St. Lopis Browns, who
inflated his average 23 points to
.360. The rise lifted him into
third place in the American
league, 17 points behind the
steady slugging of Cleveland1
Jeff Heath.
Reiser dropped 10 points In the
National league race and was
threatened by Johnny Mize .of
the St. Louis Cardinals, who
pumped his batting up 11 points

He told Owen that he found his
heavier rivals easier to beat than
light-heavyweights because he

Londos specializes in a standing

punishing to rivals. The Greek
