Harris Breaks World Discus Throw Oakland Again Defeats Loop Leading Sacramento Solons (Associated Press) Sacramento's Coast league base ball prestige is beginning to slip. The Senators fell before Oakland again Friday night, 3 to 2, prov ing they're not the near-invincible team their record seems to: indi cate. It took 13 innings of steady pressure before Sacramento wilted in the face of Stanley Corbett's seven-hit pitching and Oakland's power, at the . plate. In another drawn-out game, San Diego squeezed by Hollywood 4 to 3 - Washington Crew Coach Pessimistic FOUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y, June 21 (U.R) Most of the crews as sembled on the banks of the Hud son were eased up in preparation for final time trials over the week end, but Al Ulbrickson) coach of the Waningtcn Huskies, sent his varsity and junior varsity eiKhls ever the full course for Ihe last time belore.the regatta Wednes day. Ulbrickson clocked his varsity boat fcr thi four miles in 19:48 and th jayvee shell for' thre. miles in 15:02, and he expressed concern over the former. 'They need some more condi tioning," he said. "I knew they would not reach their peak be cause we had such bad weather in Seattle before coming East, but I never dreamed they would look as ragged as they did today". How ever, I'm quite satisfied with the junior boat." The Huskies suffered their first casualty today when Doyle Fow ler, No. 4 varsity oarsman, came in after a short afternoon spin With a sore throat and slight cold. . If Fowler is unable to row on Wednesday, Ulbrickson would use Bill Sauer or Hi Leinenweber, his J. V. No. 4 and 6. Alternate Chri stofferson would then come up to fill in the vacancy, in the second shell. ' ."If that' happens, we don't do any winning on Wednesday," Ul brickson commented. To counteract Ulbrickson's pes simism, Coach Ky Ebright of Cali fornia said that the Huskies looked even better than they did in lick ing the Bears by three lengths earlier in the year. "Just wait till you see them on Wednesday," ne advised. . - COUGARS SKED AGGIES PULLMAN, Wash.,. Spokane Indians Regain WIL Lead (Associated Press) Spokane went back into the Western. . International baseball league lead by half a game Friday night, defeating Yakima, 13-10, in a 10-inning blasting match. Yakima had held the league lead just 24 hours. Frank Milani s triple with three men on base sewed up the game for Spokane in the tenth after the lead had shifted half a dozen times during the regular playing period. Spokane, incidentally, ran up the tidy total of 17 hits to Yakima's 10. , The evenings most impressive performance, however, was given by Tacoma, which scored a double shutout over Wenatchee, 9 to 0 and 3 to 0. Bryant Stephens turned in a steady eight-hit job in the opener and Mel Marlowe, pitching his fourth straight win, allowed only seven Wenatchee hits in the nightcap. .Vancouver also scored a shutout at Salem's expense. The num ber 13 came up for Salem 13 Vancouver hits which produced four runs in the first inning and three others later for the 7-0 score. Cy Greenlaw, hurling for the Canadian team, gave seven hits. OREGON Yanks Trounce Detroit, 14-4 DiMaggio Hits Safety In 33rd Straight Game By JUDSON BAILEY (Associated Press Sports Writer) If the New York Yankees never had had their super-teams of super-stars Ruth, Gehrig, Gomez, Lazzeri and the rest this year's club might be called great. Fans often get excited over teams nowhere near as powerful as the present Yankees, who are handicapped in gaining recognition because the memory of exploits of their marvelous predecessors lin gers. Yet the way the Bombers are blasting in the American league right now, there is a possibility they will become another scourge. The Yankees are in second place, to be sure, but they have beaten the pace setting Cleveland Indians seven times in 10 games and didn't really get rolling until recently. Won 10 of Last 12 They have won 10 of their past 12 games and looked impressive in doing it. In 16 consecutive games they have walloped 27 home runs. Joe DiMaggio has hit safely in 33 straight contests, matching the great streak of Rogers Horns by in 1922 in the National league, Charley "King Kong" Keller has hit a home run in each of the past four games. This was the sort of slugging the Yankees threw at the Detroit Tigers Friday for a 14-4 victory. DiMaggio collected four hits. Cleveland was beaten 7-6, by the lowly Washington Senators in a loose game that included 30 hits and three errors. Jeff Heath made four hits for the second straight day and the Indians rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to tie the score. but the Senators punched across the winning run in their half when George Archie singled, stole second, and raced home on a sin gle by Buddy Lewis. Dodgers Improve Position The Boston Red Sox. outhit for once, managed to beat the St. Louis Browns, 4-2, in the only other American league game. The Brooklyn Dodgers improved their position in the National lea gue by clipping the Cincinnati Reds, 6-z, behind the three-hit pitching of chubby Hugh Casey. The New York Giants scored five runs in the eighth inning of a night game at St. Louis to beat the Cardinals, 6-2, and cut their first place margin to two games. Lefty Larry French pitched four-hit ball to bring the Chicago Cubs a 5-0 shutout over the Bos ton Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies, who lost a big lead and their ball game to the Cardinals Thursday, re peated the same trick against the Pittsburgh . Pirates Friday. A three-run homer by Nick Etten in the seventh gave the Phils a 6-2 lead. But the Pirates scored four times in their half of the seventh and won, 7-6.
