Hayes, was featur ed in a recent series of pictures appearing in Portland news paper showing the Rose Festival queen, Betty Jane Harding, spend ing a busy Sunday, Miss Hayes, who attended junior high school here, was shown with her cousin, Betty Jane, returning from church service. Underneath this story of the domestic and medical life of the two brothers is en argu ment for the treatment of the pa tient as well as the disease. Marya Zaturenska who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1838 has Just had published "The Listening Landscape." This new collection shows here an ootsfan ing lyric poet. The critics point to the poems "Lullaby," "Flowering Laurel" and "The Lunar Tide," as being the most outstanding in the DOOSC. "Without sensationalism the author writes of conditions in the Hawaiian Islands, now of vital concern to the United States as a focus of defense in the Pacific, Business: is controlled by inter locking monopolies, fee Japanese population presents acute difficul ties, and a possible menace, and the relations of army; navy and civilians are a source of friction. This is an expose that reveals the working of an etamornic and palitt cal set-up that has been unusually successful in controlling publicity;! it is an objective study of the Hawaii that lies behind what Hie tourist sees." . The story of man's eonouest of fee air is told by S, Paul Johnston to "Horizons Unlimited." Many striking photographs and an in tegrated text are used. The author Is eo-ordinator of research of the National Advisory committee for aeronautics. A republished collection of Chinese poems with a few changes from the 1919 edition is "Transla tions From the Chinese" by Ar thur Waley. The book was orig inally in two volumes ana this time has been put into one volume. One of the loveliest thing's about the book is the illustrations which were done by LeRoy Baldridge for this edition. Coast Guard Extends Age Limit to 31 Due to the national emergency the United States coast guard has extended, the age limit for orgin al enlistment to 31 years. Accord ing to Chief Boatswain, H, O, Nielsen, recruiting officer, Soots 37 Federal Office Building, Se attle, Wash., young men between 18 to 31 years of age are now elig ible for enlistment in Uncle Sam's sea going police force, provided they meet certain otner require ment. Thev must be American citizens, not married, be of good character and able to pass a rigid physical examination. Enlistments in tms arm or trie military forces are for three year periods. Opportunities for travel, education and advancement in the coast guard Is greater now than ever before. Any qualified veuns man who desires to team a trade and later return to civil life, or who wants to remam in the coast guard until retirement after 20 or SO years service, should contact the recruiting office at once. Those registered tinder the selective service act are eligible for nlistment until thy are actu ally inducted into the army. The Seattle recruiting omce is also authorized to make enroll ment of young men, between 13 to 23 years of age, for a special course of training, in the maritime service, which fits tfiern tor a career In the merchant marine. The nfcysical requirements are the same as for enlistment in the coast guard. Any one interested may contact the recruiting officer for further information. J. H.
