Plans Annual Dinner A. meeting will be held Friday, January 16, in the' high school building, at 3 o'clock. Election of officers will take place at the annual meeting of the Reedsport chamber of commerce Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the city coun cil chamber. All members- are urged to attend this meeting. Principal Leavci Eugene Goode, principal of the Reedsport grade school for the past several years has been granted a leave of absence and is attending Oregon normal school at Mon mouth arrived in Reedsport last week and will substitute as prin cipal of the local grade school during Mr. Goode's absence. During the past week Douglas County Roadmaster Frier, and Commissioners Roadman and Hutchinson, were Reedsport visi tors while in this vicinity inspect ing work being done on the Loon lake road. At the present time ten county trucks are being used to haul gravel from the plant of the Umpqua gravel company at Brandy Bar and it is stated that 10 more trucks will bo. immediate ly put on the job by the county in order to expedite the work. The road is being widened, graveled and otherwise improved to permit logging operations on a more ex tensive scale. Lease Station Announcement is made by Dur bin and Abbott, operators of the Gardiner Service Station, of the leasing of the L. C. Arthur garage and service station on Highway 101 in Reedsport. Messrs. Durbin and Abbott will operate the newly acquired garage and continue op erations of the Gardiner station. Mr. Arthur will confine his ac tivities to his auto wrecking busi ness. Warren McWillis, Reeds port fuel dealer, has 'acquired the wood business previously operated by Mr. Durbin and Mr. Abbott and will employ aditional trucks in order to take care of the wood output of the Gardiner and Win Chester Bay Lumber companies. Seventeen members of the Reedsport high football team and the team manager received letters at the Christmas program given recently. A gold engraved football Chamber, City Council Announce Tuesday Meetings; Other Grove News Given DEERHORN, Jan. 13 (Special) The Deerhorn Parent-Teacher association met Friday evening at the schoolhouse for the January business and social session. Lester Wheeler was chairman, due to the absence of both the president and vice-president. About 50 per sons were present for the evening. Mrs. John Sloan, chairman of the hot lunch committee, reported that at the recent WPA cooks' meeting which she attended, in structions were not to accept any green beans, corn or peas, home canned that had not been pro cessed in a pressure cooker. The federal commodities which have been available during the past several months in proportion to the number of under weight chil dren in the community, will prob ably not be distributed, owing to the new stamp plan for distribut ing surplus supplies in Lane coun ty, according to information sup plied at the cooks' meeting. Regular business was trans- Granger Receives Medal for Program GOSHEN, Jan. 13 (Special) Mrs. E. W. Empcy, past lecturer of Goshen grange, recently re ceived the medul awarded in 1940 to the one grange lecturer in Ore gon, who presented the best plan for a Boaster night program. The program for which Mrs. Empey received the medal was given last fall at Goshen grange on the an nual booster night. The basketry club will meet at an enrollee of the CCC. He is now ' residing at Triangle Lake. Friends of Mrs. Ida Benninger will be glad to know that she is improving since being seriously ill at the home of her son Claude Benninger of Eugene. The ladies of the Horton aid met recently at the home of Mrs. A. after business matters at Triangle Lake. School started Jan. 6 after two weeks' vacation with an attendance of 13 scholars. Mrs. Ross, who has lived in one of Riley Petty's houses for the past three years, has bought a place 12 miles west of Eugene and is mov ing out there. The Orling sawmill started oper ating again last week after a two weeks' vacation through the holidays. Mr. Lee Odell is again hauling wood from the Orling mill. donations made by the Ladies Auxiliary, all of which will be given to a needy family of one of the members. The next meeting of the lodge will be the social meeting. The Bid and Bye Dinner club met Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hunter. Mrs. Walter Smith held high score for women and J. Brighton Leonard held high for men. Mrs. C. L. Stroup held low score. The club will meet in two weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Stroup. Visitors Leave Mr. and Mrs. Loren Stewart and son La Sells left Monday for their home in Lakeview after spending the week-end with Major and Mrs. La Sells Stewart. Loren Stew art has been working in the U. S. land office exchange in Port land for the past six weeks and is now returning to his forest ser vice position at Lakeview. Mrs. Lee Boyd of Pendleton is visiting her sister and brother-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Craig. enjoyed at noon, followed by the business meeting which was pre sided over by the president, Mrs. Walter Roberts. Election of officers was held. The officers chosen were Jean Swope, president; Zelma James, vice president; Rosa Hays, secretary-treasurer. James Bardwell has left for Texas to bo with her father, who is ill. The event, sponsored annually by the Oregon state system of higher education, is for the purpose of helping seniors to determine the institution of higher education they wish to attend upon gradua tion from high school. All high school seniors of the county are invited, Roseburg seniors acting as hosts to the visitors. Aid Society Meets NOTI, Jan. 13 (Special) The Ladies' Aid society of the Church of Christ met recently for the reg ular meeting for quilting and other work. A comfort was tied for the Howard Day family who recently lost all their household goods when the Taylor house in which they were living was burned. Women of the community also gave them canned fruit and other goods. The members of the Kill Kare Klub and the Aid society have made plans to work jointly on sewing and knitting for the Red Cross, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the church, when it will be decided on how often to meet and I what work will be done later on.
