W) Fin nish leaders showed intense inter est in reports reaching Helsinki to day stating that Latvia and Estonia were growing restive under their new military agreements with Sov iet Russia and possibly were ap proaching a crisis in their relations with Moscow. The Finns were watching par ticularly military developments across the Gulf of Finland. Gen. Berkins, chief of the Latvian army, was reported to have gone to Es tonia to negotiate with General Johan Laidoner, commander-in-chief of the Estonian army, in con- n e c 1 1 o n with cooperation t o strengthen the national defenses of the two states. Eugenean's Offer j To Give Calif ornians Rain Is Spurned SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 13. UP) "But Mr. Watson, a rain maker came to San Diego in 1916, and the results were disastrous. We had great floods causing a considerable loss of life and a great amount of property dam age." Thus the chamber of commerce today declined an offer of Ray H. Watson, Eugene, Ore., for $2,000 to $5,000 to come to San Diego and "produce more rain than your locality has seen for a long time." PRISCILLA CLUB MEETS SHEDD, Feb. 13. (Special) The Priscilla club met recently at the home of Mrs. Lyda Gitlens. Mrs. Dale Thompson was in charge of the entertainment. The contest prize was won by Mrs. Bertha Elliott. Club members attending were Mrs. Dorothea McKinley, Mrs. Ruth Roberts, Mrs. Helen Pugh, Mrs. Ellen Zimmerman, Mrs. Ella May Pugh, Mrs. Myrtle Pimm, Mrs. Ann Pugh, Mrs. Dale Thomp son, Mrs. Myrtle McLagen, ' Mrs. Agnes McDonald, Mrs. Hazel Chandler, Mrs. Helen Lingelbach, Mrs. Ruth Halzephel. Mrs. Bertha Elliott, and the hostess, Mrs. Lyda Gitlens. The hostess assisted by Mrs. Ann Pugh and Mrs. Dale Thompson, served refreshments. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Elaine Poland. PHILOMATH NEWS PHILOMATH, Feb. 13. (Spe. cial) The Firemen's annual ban quet was held recently at the city hall. More than 50 were present. Three long tables were spread with flowers, candles and food. A. L. Keeney's showed his travel pic tures which were in colors. A district - Christian Endeavor rally will be held February 16 at the First U. B. church at 7:30 p. m. All societies of the district are ex pected to be represented. Russell Todd has traded his ranch on the Alsea highway to Wiley Mudgett of Albany for his house and lot in Albany. The deal was made by R. M. Lance, realtor, A truck carrying three timber workers crashed into: the Philo math high school bus as it was turning at the end of the route Friday morning, on the Alsea road. Not much damage was done to the school bus. The work truck was quite badly damaged and one man was cut by flying glass. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER HALSEY, Feb. 13. (Special) The World Day of Prayer was held Friday afternoon at the local Church of Christ by the women of that church with ladies of the lo cal Methodist church as their guests. Margaret Smith opened the services with sacred music selec. tions on the piano. Gertrude Smith acted as reader assisted by var ious women in the congregation. Series of prayer were offered by varioius women of the congrega tion also. Mrs. Willis Kirk and her sister, Mrs. Henry Kirk sang a duet, Mrs. Ted Boyer, a vocal solo. and Mrs. Floyd V. Barrett a vocal solo. Members of the Golda Wells Circle acted out a portion and showed what "Hands" do for American Indians. In the cast were: Mrs. LaVelle Walberg, Mrs. Wilma Albertson, Mrs. Ruth Kirk and Mrs. Gladys Smith. Mrs. Edna Kirk was leader for this play lette.
