(Spe cial) The Cascade unit of the American Legion auxiliary and the Cascade post members will hold a joint social meeting Janu ary 25, in the Legion hall. A baked bean supper will be served at 6:30, and all eligible members are in vited to attend. The affair es pecially honors the new members. A delegation from the Eugene post and auxiliary will also be present. An entertainment is being planned following the supper. The auxili ary committee in charge is Mrs Fred Swanson, Mrs. Orval Dean Mrs. Francis Allen, and Mrs. Fred-erickson. SHOOTS OWL OAKRIDGE, Jan. 20. (Special) The accurate shooting ability of Mrs. C. B. McFarland brought to end the escapades of a chicken thieving owl at her home at the Flat Creek ranger station recent ly. Her attention was called to the fact that something was bothering her chickens. With her gun in hand, she raced to the chicken yard but her coming scared away the culprit. However, it landed in the timber nearby. As it was just dusk, only the profile of the bird was visible against the sky. Rais ing her gun, she banged away without any thought of hitting the owl, but it fell to the ground. Upon investigation she found that it was a large owl with a wing spread of 4 'i feet. Its body measured 18 inches in height. PLAN SKATING PARTY SANTA CLARA, Jan. 20. (Spe-1 ciai) The Santa Clara high school will sponsor a school skate Mon day evening, January 22, at the Midway Skating Rink, at 7:30 o'clock. ELECTION HELD LONE PINE, Jan. 20 (Special) The Lone Pine Women's club held its annual election of officers Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Abe Chambers. Mrs. Perry Etchison was co-hostess. The new officers are Mrs. Jesse Smitson, president; Mrs. Perry Etchison, vice-president; Mrs. Guy Lamor eaux, secretary - treasurer. The outgoing officers are Mrs. Fred Brougher, Mrs. Perry Etchison, Mrs. Lester Gunson and Mrs. Guy Lamoreaux, corresponding secre tary. This office has been done away with as the two reporters for the local papers take care of it. Everyone was reminded of the rummage sale by the school to raise money to pay for the school platform. Grange Notes JASPER A "hobo" supper will be served Tuesday evening, January 23, seven o'clock, at the grange hall. Each one attending is asked to bring a tin plate, a tin cup, and a knife. "Eats" will be furnished by different members of the grange. The lecturer's pro gram will be a "hobo party. The regular business session of the grange will also be held the same evening.' The Home Economics club met recently at the home of Mrs. Bertha Bradway for an all day meeting with a potluck dinner at noon. Mrs. Nellie Forcum as sisted the hostess in entertaining the club. The meeting was conducted by the chairman, Edith Dunn, Mrs. Helen Crader was elected secretary in place of Mrs. Lucille Mitchell. Organizing a drill team and new regalia were discussed. Mrs. Ethel Lynch, Zora Franklin and Mrs. Crader were appointed to get prices on material for regalia. Plans were made to help with the P.-T. A. program February 1. It was decided to do work for the Doernbocher hosDitnl and child ren's farm home again this year. A bazaar was discussed. It was decided to start work soon on ar ticles for bazaar. A party will be held at the grange hall January -0. those present at club meet ing were Mesdames Ethel Lynch, llda Dillon, Nettie., Moore, Vera Seales, Elva Ashley, Zora Frank lin, Helen Crader and Edith Dunn. A grange meeting will he held Tuesday night January 23. The men are to have charge of the program, Mohawk - McKenzle Mohawk McKenzie grange members met in regular session at the grange hall this week. The meeting was preceded by a covered dish din ner. At this meeting the discus sion was to make better grangers and homes. Also games were played and resolutions voted upon. A clean up day is to be held in the near future. Wanda Myers and Irene Sweezy were on the supper committee. A special meeting of the Home Economics club of Mohawk-Mc-Kenzie grange was held at the Sarah Spores home this week. The time was spent in sewing on dish towels. Plans were made on visiting the Cobure Home Eco nomics club, Friday afternoon, also plans for a penny supper to be given Saturday evening, Janu ary 27, were made at this meet ing. The committee is Lydia Ed Sell, Cleo Hill, Trcsa Brown and Carrie Hill. Thurston The Thurston grange met last week at the hall with the regular and special business being brought before the grange mem bership. The officers seating drill came first and the count for the evening showed 54 present. This included two new members, Mrs. Hazel Bird and her mother, Mrs. Carr, who were obligated by Fred Simmons m the third and fourth degree. The secretary, Ross Math ews, read the records and later in the evening the , communications which were at hand. The com mittec reports were from the H. E. chairman, Mrs. Harwood, who announced that the birthday money had been turned over to her, that there would be an a day meeting of the H. E. club Feb. 14. The men are invited to attend this meeting and make re pairs about the hall, the ladies to bring pieces for making a quilt top. Mr. Hanna reported on the legislative committee work and his talk was on the fair. Fred Simmons reported on the agricul ture committee. Mrs. Brown re ported as chairman of the piano committee and the grange decid ed to purchase the piano the committee recommended. The same committee was to dispose of the piano which has been in use in the hall. Arrangements are bcinE marie to visit Mohawk-McKenzie grange. Volunteer Firemen To Hold Annual Banquet At Grove COTTAGE GROVE, Jan. 20 (Special) The volunteer fire de partment wilhold its annual ban quet Monday 'evening, Jan. 22, at 6:30 at the Cottage Grove hotel. Jack Hayes, state fire deputy of Salem, will be the speaker and there will be several musical se lections. City officials and several old-time members will be guests. Dean Onthank Speaks at Creswell Father-Son Dinner; News of Past Week Given CRESWELL, Jan. 20 (Special) The Creswell Civic club was the scene of a merry company of men and boys Thursday evening at a father and son banquet sponsored by the Hi Y club. Miniature lakes and mountain slides with skiers formed the centerpieces at the table with a committee of the Civic club In charge of the serving. The guest speaker for the evening was Dean Karl W. Onthank, person nel director of the administration of the University of Oregon. He spoke on "The Attitudes of Father Toward the Son and the Son To ward the Father." Other program numbers included: Welcome by Billy Lower, president of the Hi Y club; response, H. N. Traxlcr; music by a German band consist ing of Arthur Taylor, Ernest Syph- ers, Alton Wheeler, John Camp and Billy Lower directed by Bur- nell Jones; vocal solo, Paul Har vey accompanied toy Lucile Kent George A. The grade school boys played basketball with the Marcola school team Thursday and won. Cars were supplied by Mrs. H. W. Tay lor and W. F. Harcombe. Mr. Harcombe is the coach. Llewllyn Francis of New York City has arrived Thursday to visit with his people, Mr. and Mrs. David Francis. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Land vis ited recently with his brother, Lee Land and family at Diinsmuir, Cal the project. Mrs. Hubert Gray resigned as dance chairman. Mrs. Fred Russel was again chosen as grange reporter. The lecturer's hour consisted of music by Jim Neilson, Verl Mercer and Ray Procer, three young men from Skinners Camp Y. G. A. They played several selections through the evening on a guitar, accordion and cornet. Arthur Priaulx of Eugene was speaker of the eve ning and talked on taxes, and auditing the county budget. Mrs. McCloskey, the lecturer an nounced that February 21 Frank Ronnie would show motion pic tures of his trip to San Francisco fair and also local pictures taken of the different industries around Thurston. This will be held at the beginning of the grange meet ing with the regular grange ses sion being held afterwards. The program and pictures will be open to the public. Refreshments closed the evening's social hour. For the first meeting in March, Mr. Mc Gilchrist, who Is in the office of the secretary of state, Earl Snell, at Salem, will speak and his sub ject will be on "The Capitol." February 22 the grange is plan ning a party. Mrs. Marion Adams who is in charge of the play for the spring festival selected the characters for that work. Santa Clara Santa Clara grange met the past week with 37 mem bers and 2 visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Marian Kelso of Irving. Mrs. S. S. George of the legislative com mittee reported, also Mrs. Bertie Kellncg on the trade treaty and its effects on the American farm er. Mr. Kelso talked on the use of shoddy instead of wool, and the efforts on the wool grower. Lo rane and other granges are in vited to bring candidates to Santa Clara Feb. 20 to take the third and fourth degrees. Irving grange will visit Santa Clara March 5 and furnish the program, Santa Clara to furnish refreshments. The program for the evening included, reading, Mrs. A. V. Junction City A number of granges have been working at their hall this week, the men painting the outside of Die build ing ;md other work, and the ladies quilting and preparing dinners for the laborers. At the Jan. 26 remi- lar meeting Founders' day will be observed and a homecoming at tendance Is urged. Charter mem bers of Junction City grange are especially urged to attend this meeting. A suitable program is being arranged for the evening and refreshments of cake, sand wiches and coffee will be served. Irving The rving grange met for the regular meeting Friday evening starting Willi a penny sup per. There were 50 present for the supper and program which followed. For the lecturer's pro gram Miss Theresa Kelly and two of her pupils presented an hour's program of piano selections. Those playing were Bruce Koppe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Koppe of Eu gene, and Miss Janet Douglas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angus Gibson of Junction City. Selec tions were played by Miss Kelly. The program was concluded by the entire group singing with Miss Kelly at the piano. Grange meet ing was called to order immedi ately by the master, Marion Kel so. There will be a conference of Lane county granges Feb. 5 at the 4-H club building in Eugene. This is to be an all-day meeting with covered dish lunch at noon. A letter was read from Irish-Swartz grocery, offering a prize of $25 in a contest between Lorane, Creswell and Dorena granges. George Lang was introduced as the oldest member of the grange and ate at the birthday table as an honored guest.
