Rees and Mrs. Janet Bullis sang solos. The refreshments were served by the Masons with Leo Helbock, Carl Dannehl, Al Shorey and C. F. Moore in charge. CRESWELL NEWS CRESWELL, Dec. 21. (Special) Manley Strawn of Portland call ed on Creswell friends Tuesday. He reported the death last week of Alphus Boyd of Portland. Mr. Boyd with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Boyd, operated a hotel in Creswell 30 years ago and have been interested in the restaurant business since leaving here. He is survived by his parents and a sis ter, Thelma. R. P. Annin, father of Mrs. L. E." Ziniker, died last week at his home In Los Angeles, Cal. Mrs. Ziniker and daughters were with him and they left for home this week, ar riving Wednesday. (Special) The Cottage Grove Townsend club held its annual election of officers at the recent meeting. The nominating commit tee presented 20 names from which the following 12 receiving the highest number of votes would consitutc the officers and commit tee chairmen: M. M. Wheeler, Mrs. Kate L. Adama, Peter Britton, W. E. Masters, Mrs. Marsh, T. G. Short, Elmer J. Kent, Mrs. O. W. Hlarkmorc, Mrs. Ethel Applewhite, I.. D. Tucker, Mrs. Sallie Hill, Mrs. W. E. Masters. Elmer J. Kent was elected president. The others are to be assigned their positions the first meeting in January. Plans were made for a Townsend birth day celebration January 8. The meeting for Monday evening, De cember 25, was postponed until January 2. Grange Has Program WALTER VILLE, Dec. 21. (Special) The Walterville grange met recently in regular session. This committee was Mr. Robson, John Sloan and O. L. Clement. The other was for the purpose of mak ing arrangements for going to Creswell for installation of officers Dec. 29, and were C. F. Grant, Ward Robson and Robert Benson. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Carter and Eugene Cadwallader were obligat ed in the first and second degrees, Talks were given by several on the conference they attended last week at Thurston, and also on improv ing the floor work. The treasurer gave her annual report and the finance committee closed the books for the year. After grange session a program was given and consisted of group singing of Christmas songs; a north pole scene ny Laurel Edith Willian, who read letters from the different mem bers who marie known their wants for presents; candle lighting by the entire group; solo by Douglas Za- DrisKie: pantomime. "Lnnstmas, with Mrs. Robert Benson acting and Mr. and Mrs. John Sloan and Mrs. Frank Page singing; music by Mrs. D. E. Benson; pantomime, "Watching Angel." After the pro gram a Christmas gift exchange was held and every one received a gift. Treats of candy and popcorn were passed. The afternoon was spent in games and a short busi ness meeting. There were seven members present and Mrs. Cole was a visitor. Gifts were ex changed. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Dan McCugh on Jan. 9. A club card party for members and their friends will be held at the home of Mrs. McCugh the night of Jan 26. Mrs. L. E. Stafford has return ed from a visit in southern Cali fornia at the home of her father, Mr. and Mrs. Mathews and son, Lloyd, have left for a visit with Mrs. Mathews' parents at Fresno, Calif, and later will take a trip to Mexico. Mrs. Irene Hollis recently en joyed a visit from her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Dunn, all of Portland. Mrs. Shields will have her Christmas program at the school house Friday at 2 p. m. AT COTTAGE GROVE COTTAGE GROVE, Dec. 21. (Special) One hundred and sixty students took part in the annual union high school concert Tues day evening at the gymnasium. The concert was directed by Miss Marian Jelinek and Charles Chris tianson. The boys' and girls' quar tet, trios and solos were special features. Ellery Wilson, accompanied by a friend, Steve Preslupskl, from San Pedro, Cal., are at the W. O. Wilson home for a few days on a furlough. They are with the U. S. navy and will join their training ship, Philadelphia, in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Wilhem and Charles Robinson of Coalinga, Cal., came Wednesday to visit their sister, Mrs. Ruth Woodson. Also Mr. and Mrs. Horace Harms of Portland have arrived and are house guests of Mrs. Harms' sis ter, Mrs. Woodson. LIBRARY GROUP MEETS REEDSPORT, Dec. 21. (Spe cial) The Library association held Its regular meeting Monday evening. Annual reports and elec tion of officers will take place at the next meeting to be held Jan uary 15. During the first half of 1939 1627 civil aircraft for domestic use were produced. This repre sents a 90 per cent increase over the same period of 1938. Joint Installation For Five Granges Is Recent Event HALSEY, Dec. 21 (Special) Chancey Sickels, of Charity grange, installed the new officers of Lake Creek grange, Charity grange, and Calapooia grange on Monday evening at Lake Creek Grange hall. A large crowd was present to witness the ceremonies and enjoy a social time following. Preceding the installation cere monies the Lake Creek grange put on a marching drill with Clar ence R. Evans, captain. The drill team was composed of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Clay of Harrisburg, Mr. and Mrs. George Hochen smith, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Jackson, Henry Brusven, Henry Peterson, Oliver G. Coldiron, Mrs. Rosa Cook, Miss Velma Owen, Mrs. Clarence Evans. Mr. Sickels was assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Byrd Waggener in the installing. (Special) The December meeting of the Laf-a-Lot club was held with Mrs. Emma Ritzdorf last week, beginning with a chili sup per served to the 12 members The supper was followed by a short business session and a Christ mas party with an exchange of gifts. The present officers were re-elected for the ensuing year. They are Lela Baldwin, president; Mary Smith, secretary; and Emma Ritzdorf, treasurer. The year's record of the card scores showed Mrs. Genevieve Jensen held high and received the grand prize, a set of pottery dishes. Glo Ferrill received grand consolation prize. Grange Will Meet; Christmas Party Is Postponed JUNCTION CITY, Dec. 21. (Special) The grange will meet in regular session on Friday eve ning, Dec. 22. The annual Christ mas party that had been planned for that evening has been called off because of the ban on public gatherings for children due to the prevalence of flu in the commun ity. Only business will be enacted at the meeting. DEXTER NEWS DEXTER. Dec. 21. (Special) Mrs. Velma Warner underwent a major operation at the Sacred Heart hospital on Tuesday morn ing. William Kolster fell and broke both arms while washing the out side windows. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Warner and soil, Allen, were badly cut and bruised in an automobile accident on Friday while returning from Portland. The grade school -will hold its Christmas program on Friday evening. The Sunday school will hold its on Sunday evening. P.-T. A. TO MEET WENDLING, Dec. 21. (Spe cial) Friday, January 5, 1940 has been scheduled as the date for the next regular Parent-Teachers association meeting because the first Monday in the month of January falls on New Year's night. A community skating par ty is to be sponsored by the P. T. A. on January 11, from 7 o'clock to 10 o'clock p. m., at the Midway Roller Rink. No Study club will be held during December. The regular January meeting will be January 19, at the home of Mrs. Walter Riggs.
