Polond's Army Fought With Germony in 1914 JITTLE Poland's army of '2,540, 000 men has met Hitler's chal lenge and is making an heroic stand against invasion. With un paralleled courage, the Poles have bitterly contested every foot of the Nazi advance. Thus the armies that once fought side by side are today enemies. For the Poles did fight for the German cause early in the World War. Long before 1914, Polish pa triots had organized a secret army, the Polish Legion. At that time there was no independent Poland. Part was under German rule; part was incorporated into the Austro-Hungarian Empire; and a third portion was held by Russia. It was chiefly against Russia that the hatred of Joseph Pilsud skl, one of the organizers of the Legion, was directed. An ardent patriot, Pilsudski had been exiled and imprisoned for his anti-Rus-fian activities. During the Russo Japanese war he offered the serv ices of the Legion to Japan, but the Japanese did not fall in with his plan. Russia's efforts to stamp out Polish rebellion only Increased devotion to the cause of Polish Independence. When Germany moved against Russia the Legion was mobilized, fought with the German army. But Pilsudski foresaw the danger that Germany might not agree to the formation of an in dependent nation and he and his Legionnaires refused to swear allegiance to Germany.
