Mc Donald: Joan Bennett might just as well wash the black dye out of her hair, because Hedy Lamarr has still got ecstasy! This picture of warm love did come to Eugene on a hot day, but first viewers spent the rest of the day shooing friends to see Hedy. If her second picture was really the flop that caused it to be shelv ed, posterity will probably find it brought out when Miss Lamarr's bcautv has faded. She and Robert Taylor make as handsome a couple as any Hollywood could put for ward. In this story of warm love In some port of Indo china their strance passions are presented. In her first picture, "Algiers," which wasn't expected to be the triumph it was, Hedy gave me the impression she couldn't act. The box office showed that her beauty was enough, however. She was evidently taught a few things in her second unreleased film, be cause as "Lady," she registers emotions with the best of them. Manon is a whits girl some place in Asia. She has just enough native blood coursing in her viens to keep her from highest society. When she meets an Ameri can adventurer, done to per fection by a slangy Robert Taylor, she also finds love. He jumps the yacht which Is tak hlm about the world and soon marries the Kirl. After the ceremony she is un able to leave for a European honeymoon and an American home because of the violent love of a high government official. Af ter being spurned he resolves that she will never leave her native land. And she never DOES leave. The tangled triangle has enough interesting knots to make the pic ture itself unusual from a dramatic standpoint. Though the customers cry with the curtain, they can rest that Hedy is not really dead, that Hol lywood will hasten to capitalize on the European ecstasy girl, have many more of her pictures made soon. Best line of laugh, by someone in the audience at the climax when Mr. Taylor is asking Miss Lamarr to tell him all: "Why don't you TELL him?" and then, after the heroine's killed the villain, a jubi lant: "Good." I5e t hlltfren le Russians Conclude Nazi Trade Agreement MOSCOW, Aug. 21. (U.R A new Russian-German trade agree- ment may prove a substantial step for further improvement not only of economic but also of political relations between the Soviet union and Germany, the newspaper Pravada, official organ of the com munist party, said today. "It can be safely stated that the new agreement is a turning point in business relations of the two countries," said Izvestia, official newspaper organ of the govern ment. Announcement of the Russian- German agreement came at a time When it had been admitted that differences had arisen in negotia tions by Russia with Britain and French military missions for an anti-aggression military alliance. Negotiations with the British and French military missions, in recess during the week-end pend ing receipt by them of fresh in structions, were resumed today. Intrinsically, the trade agree ment was important enough, in volving an $80,000,000 credit by Germany to Russia and purchase by Russia of $72,000,000 of Ger man goods. The comments by the two offi cial newspapers, however, gave it even additional moment. Pravda reviewed at length the history of negotiations for the trade agreement and said in con clusion: "The new trade and credit agreement between the Soviet union and Germany, born in an at mosphere of tense political condi tions, is called upon to relieve this atmosphere. It may prove a sub stantial step for further improve ment not only of economic but also of political relations between the Soviet union and Germany." Izvestia said m part: "It should be noted that in course of prolonged negotiations there arose a number of difficul ties which were due chiefly to the tense atmosphere of political rela tions between Germany and the Soviet union. "Nevertheless negotiations were successfully concluded; since both sides displayed sufficient willing ness to improve their trade rela tions it was this striving that helped to solve all disputed prob lems. "The trade and credit agreement must undoubtedly substantially enliven the exchange of commod ities between the two countries.' Izvestia recalled how Germany had dropped from first place in trade with Russia to fifth place, behind the united States, Britain, Belgium and Holland.
