The well-oaiancea oenerais rolled up a point total of 28 most ly on points outside of the win ning 5's, while Eugene, Mohawk and Cottage Grove high schools garnered 18 points between them. Lane county s greatest Did ror fame came when Chuck Elliott. 230-pound Axeman shot putter, bettered his new state record with a heave of 54 feet, 14 inches, al most two feet better than the mark set here in 1937 by Bill Blackledge of Corvallis. Lester Nelson of Woodburn also estab lished a new state record, clear ing the pole-vault standard at 12 feet, l'.b inches to eclipse the joint record of Hendershott of Bend and Simmons of Forest Grove made in 1936. Hurdle Mark Tied A third state record was tied by Gibson of Washington who topped the -low timbers in th 200-yard hurdles in 23 flat, the same mark made by Brady of Washington last year at Corvallis. Probably the outstanding indi vidual performance as far as lo cal fans were concerned outside of Elliott's record-breaking shot puts was the sparkling running of Wally Hopkins of Mohawk high. Coach John Buchanan's galloper took second in both the quarter-mile and 880. Early in the afternoon Hopkins followed on the heels of Johnson of Med ford the entire way, unable to overtake the southerner, who finished within eight-tenths of a second of the state mark. In the half-mile Hopkins was left in the ruck all the way, being forced to find his way out of pockets and take the outside lanes. On the final 100 yards, around the last turn, Hopkins moved up on the leaders overtaking Hamer of Eddyville and missing Shinn of Salem by a stride. The two sec onds gave Mohawk eight points and 10th in the final standings. Jlcdford Cops Second Grant lived up to pre-meet predictions by nosing out Bill Bowerman's Medford high team by nine points. The Black Tor nado won second with 19 points, followed by Washington of Port land the only team to win two firsts outright with 17. The re mainder of the field finished as follows: Salem 12; Corvallis Ui; Pen dleton 9; West Linn 9; Gold Beach 9; Scappoose 8 Vfe ; Mohawk 8; Benson 7; Eugene 6; Mac-Hi 6; Lakeview 5; Woodburn 5; Ontario 5; Athena 4; Chemawa 4; Cottage Grove 4; Beaverton 4; Union 3; Milwaukie 3; Lincoln 3; Eddy ville 3; Franklin 2; McMinnville 2; Bend 2; La Grande 1; Arling ton 114; Hood River 1V; Albany I'M Gresham 1; Toledo 1; Mo lalla 1; Phoenix 1; Redmond 1. Dollarhide of Lakeview came close to setting another new rec ord in the broad jump. He won the event in 22 feet, 54 inches, three-quarters of an inch within the state mark made by Burdett of Sandy in 1935. Near Jump Record In tying for the high jump, Cain and Newlands came within one and ?8 inches of the mark set by DuFresne of Roseburg in 1931. Individual honors, outside of the lads who established new marks, were shared by Lloyd Le Clair of Gold Beach, Jesse Truax of Corvallis and Griffin of Pen dleton. LeClair won the discus and was runner-up to Elliott in the shot put. Truax won the cen tury, tied for second in the 220 yard dash and ran anchor on the fourth-place relay team. Griffin won the 220 and took a second in the 100. All three men scored 9 points and will receive medals as top individual performers of the state. The opening ceremony of this afternoon's meet was rained out but the presentation of awards was made on the "queen's" plat form by University of Oregon dig nitaries. The half-mile relay was a heart-breaker for both leading teams Grant and Medford. The Generals took the initial lead and kept it until Thomas, Benson negro elbowed his way past Gear hart of Grant on the third lap. A Service On Freight Remember Ben Phillips Transportation Co. Manager Ed Brauner's Eugene troupe climbed to the .500 mark in- league standings last week by upsetting Albany, 5 to 4, in a ninth-inning rally. The week be fore Eugene dropped a close opener at Toledo. , Marine Electric has a crew of experienced semi-pro players Though the Portlanders have lost twice, they are reputed to have a capable aggregation, and this week indications are that it will be further strengthened. Kocer On Mound ' Opposing pitchers today will probably be Joe Kocer for Eu gene and either Bill O'Donnell Jack Shaw or Oches for Marine Electric. Shaw started last week against Hills Creek. Both Shaw and O'Donnell are members of the strong University of Portland team. Oches is a well-known Portland semi-pro hurlw. Ready to step in if . Kocer should falter will be hefty Bob Welton, who chucked for Eugene two seasons ago, and tall Ole Johnson. The veteran Harry Clon ingcr who has picked up his ter rific hitting pace where he left off last fall, will be behind the bat. On first base will be one of the several promising youngsters on the Eugene roster, Abe Hatha way. Hathaway, a sephomore in high school, performed in major league fashion around the initial hassock last week, handling all chances, smashing out a triple and a timely single and scoring the winning run. Smith May Start Another member of Eugene high's "million dollar prep in field," little Max Smith, may start on second base, though he may give way to Arnold "Speck" Lovelace, veteran Oregon semi pro infielder. Neal Nichols, Eu gene high captain, is another youthful second sacker on the roster, and even Manager Brau ner, who cracked out a hit in the pinch last week, may take a turn at the keystone. Wayne Phillips of Westfir, whose slugging has been sensa tional thus far, will he at short for Eugene, with Johnny Dunn, rifle-armed favorite of Lane county fans, on third base. Brauner will choose his out field trio from a group consist ing of Ed Russell, Bunny Barker, Bill Shear, Forrest Van Duyne and Jack Moore. The first-named three started last week. Shear is a fourth Eugene high player. Hills Takes Trip Marine Electric is likely to line up with Glenz on first base, Man ager Jim Turner on second, George at shortstop, Heath on third, and Wittcke, Peterson and Wetzler in the outfield. Cianna will probably catch. While Eugene monopolizes the attention of home fans, Hills Creek's fence-busting Hillbillies, tied with Bend for the loop lead, will journey to Albany. Bun Kel say will attempt to hang up a third successive pitching victory. Remainder of the Hills lineup is expected to include Grover Kel say behind the bat, Howard Parks on first. Cliff Baxter on second, Bud Tuthill at short, Red O'Connell on third, and Carl Szedlock, Homer Parks and Hig Lawson in the outfield. am Price m he "all three 1 1P' 1 Boar-00,9 1 Delivered In Eugene I BUT CAS FOR MOST PfOPtl I BUCKNUM MOTOR Cj Yanks Capture Tenth Sfraighl Red Ruffing 10th straight al1'"' regime of Mmiwh? when thev whinL White Sox.wSJtf.
