U.R Evidence of an unmistakable population drift toward the Pacific Northwest has been revealed in p survey of 27 Oregon. Washington and Idaho cities conducted by the Equitable Savings and Loan association. In 40 years more than a million had 32.3 per cent and Idaho 30.3. But in the last nine years Idaho lias taken the lead, with 18.1 per cent to Washington's 12.9 and Ore gon's 9.2. Medium-sized cities and small-towns have led the advance. The research group responsible for the survey attributed the rise to the favored position of the persons settled in the region, the j northwest, and cited its low infant survey showed, and the migration is continuing today at a rate l-.alf-again in excess of any other United States population trend. The survey findings bring both cheer and grief to northwest cham bers of commerce encouraged on the one hand by prospects of a new industrial and agricultural empire, and at the same time faced by many problems resulting from the population growth. The collective population of the areas surveyed was only 336,052 in 1900. Today it has swelled to 1,375,765 and indications point to a new migration upcurve stemming from the Golden Gate exposition. The effect of expositions and particularly, their less orthodox features h3.s been notable. San Francisco's famous "Stella." a can vas nude first shown at the 1915 exposition, is given credit for some of the western drift, and Sally Rand herself, the greatest single attraction of the current show, may exert considerable influence on fu ture statistics. The survey is based on U. S. cen sus figures for earlier years, and on census estimates, water meter connections, post office service and similar information for the present. In the 27 cities surveyed, 12 each In Oregon and Washington and three in Idaho, an average popula tion gain of 11.8 per cent was re corded since 1930. This compares with a six per cent gain for the nation during the same period. For a 19 year period, beginning in 1920. Oregon has reported the greatest growth of any northwest state 33.9 per cent. Negotiations between Dr. Hel muth Wohlthat, German trade expert, and the Rumanian finance ministry were taking place here. The discussions were said to be approaching a conclusion in' an j atmosphere of "understanding on But it was also asserted no political problems nor German Rumanian relations were being discussed. Rumanians admitted their trade with Germany would be increased to a marked degree, but they said the complete Ger man demands were not being met. There was to be no yielding of any political points, they insisted. Rumania Rolls Into Nazi Economic Orbit BUCHAREST. March 21.
