Chemicals from Bonneville Dam May Kill Western Farm Weeds Oregon Walnut Growers Tease California by Giving Gift Nuts STILLWATER. Okla.. Dec. 21. ! (fP A group ' of Oregon walnut growers hearing that California intercepted a shipment of walnuts intended for Oklahoma's orphans today contributed 100 Dounds of their own product. Lieut. Gov, James E. Berry of Oklahoma received a telegram from a junior chamber of com merce in Douglas county. Orecon. declaring: "Sending 100 pounds of Oreeon walnuts donated by Douglas coun ty growers for Oklahoma orphans. All we know is what we read in the papers." What the Oreeonians had "read in the papers" was that California agriculture inspectors had halted shipment of a ton of English wal- nuies which Erie P. Halliburton, Oklahoma financier, had raised on his 40 acre Riverside, Calif., ranch and had donated to the orphans of his home state. However, the agriculture in spectors apparently bowed before a storm of criticism, for Hallibur ton, chairman of Oklahoma's "Santa Claus" commission, last night wired the commission the walnuts would arrive in Oklahoma City Monday. Earlier he had ad vised purchasing Oklahoma-grown pecans when it appeared California authorities would halt the shipment. A cart and huge wine barrel are suspended by a derrick high above the main street of Sion, Switzer land, to advertise the opening of the grape gathering season. Willamette Highway To Share U. S. Funds PORTLAND, Dec. 21 OP) National forest roads within the boundaries ot Oregon will get $930,000 from Uncle Sam's cash drawer, during the fiscal year ending in 1940. This was disclosed at a meeting ot the state highway commission, the bureau of public roads and the forestry service. The money has been allotted and contracts for the work will be let next spring. Among federal roads to get a slice of the money were: Willam ette highway, .4 mile grading and 5 miles oiling, $135,000; Flora Enterprise, 1.4 miles grading, $100,000; Santiam, 6 miles sur facing, $75,000; North Santiam, 6.5 miles surfacing, $70,000; Klamath Falls-Lakeview, 3.6 miles grading and surfacing. $100,000; Weston- Elgin, 5 miles surfacing and oil ing, $45,000: Pendleton-.Iohn Day, 1.4 miles grading, $45,000; Tiller- trail near Canyonville, 3 8 miles grading and sub-base, $75,000; Alsea bridge near Tidewater, $70,-000. (IP) Senator Barry (R.-Ore.) elected to fill the unexpired term of Sen ator Stciwcr (D.-Orc.) who re signed, reached the capital today. Ho said he felt there was little lie could accomplish in the short period before his term expires on January 3 but he intended to visit government officials and urge the construction of a naval base at Tongue point on the Col umbia river. "Every congressional committee which has visited the Columbia river has recognized the necessity of fortifying the mouth of the river," the Oregonian said. "Pro' per protection for the Columbia1 river should be approved and if the government decides on an increased armament defense pro gram I shall urge that the naval base at Tongue point be Included in the defenses. ,- - -e "It would be -a. short sighted policy to build up other defenses and leave them vulnerable from the Columbia river." Barry said he feared the relief situation mfght become acute in Oregon by next spring and added he hoped congress would decide to leave the handling of the ques tion to state committees. , Barry will be succeeded on Jan uary 3 by Rufus C.
