Dec. 21 Football Coach Lon Stiiier of Ore Ron State collcRe left here yes terday to spend the Christmas "hol- nys at Hastings, Neb., and at tend the annual meeting of ths National Football Coaches' asso ciation at Chicago. W ILIVIHTW OT HIP!. WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. (P) Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt vigor ously asserted today the right of a president's wife and children to live their own private lives. Discussing at her press confer ence her own acceptance of a place on an insurance company's board of directors, Mrs. Roosevelt put the question up to the people of the United States. Do they want the children of a president to be the type who do not want to earn their own living? she asked. And does the nation want a president's wife to give up all of the interests she had built up? Mrs. Roosevelt said she often had wondered whether the people of the country realized a president's family must go on with their nor mal lives while he is in the White House. Her argument ran as follows: The people elect a man as pres. ident. They don't give any of the others in the family a job. Some times, especially in the case of young people, a president is in the white house long enough for a complete restriction on their in dividual lives. And they only have a limited period to build those lives. Mrs. Roosevelt pointed out such a policy in her own case would have meant giving up a great many interests and changing her whole relation to her family. ' If the people of the nation in sisted on restrictions on the activ ities of a president's wife, she added, the time might come when a woman would say she would not go to the White House. Mrs. Roosevelt stressed the fact no member of the White House family, nor any person in the gov ernment, should ever use his or her position to ask for special favors.- She told her press conference she would accept a directorship in Roosevelt and Sargent, Boston in surance firm founded by her son, James, merely to act as James representative. Before agreeing to do so, she said, she asked if any financial obligation would be in curred, or if any real knowledge of the business was necessary. In formed it was not, she agreed to serve in James' place and to vote his stock as he suggests.
