Fig SSgEl ITHE RrGISTER-GUARD. ETTGENE, ORBOON Octogenarian Rancher Bill Brown Expresses Views On Current Topics SALEM, Ore., Nov. 22. M If BUI Brown hud it to do over again, ha would find himself a wlfa and settle down on a small farm, In' stead of building ona of the largest horse and sheep empires In the West. Brown, hale and hearty and clear of mind at 82 years, was forced out of business four years ago by "depression, aridity and horse thieves," losing the last bit of the ciitral Oregon domain which race consisted of 100,000 acres, ir.ore than 10,000 horses and 22,000 rheep. In 1916 he was off ered $300,000 for his holdings. He is terry today he did not sell. He believes America is headed for ruin unless "we raise our chil dren so they will work. Our edu cational system is all wrong. We should put our colega students to working their way through school, instead of giving them government funds or letting them live off their parents." Brown lives In the Methodist Old People's Home here, which he endowed with a $25,000 gift He never belonged to a church be cause he disapproves of "the Christian habit of preaching the 10 comandments and obeying none of them." He never tasted liquor, coffee or tea, and never smoked. He be lieves automobiles are hastening the nation's doom, and has great admiration for the Jewish race. "The Jews take care of each other and raise their children cor rectly. You never see a Jew get ting into much trouble." Brown's parents brought him from Wisconsin to Oregon City when he was a boy. After gradu ating as a teacher from San Jose, Calif, normal, he went to Burns, Ore., but decided to enter the live stock business when he was 27 years old. When livestock prices were low, he laid the foundation for his em pire by buying 4,000 horses at $3 a head. A few months later he sold them for $100 a head. He regrets that he never mar' ried, asserting that he "was kept too busy to think of love." Brown has given more than $100,000 to schools, orphan asyl ums and other charities. He thinks America Is headed for war with Japan, but he hopes it will be more successful than the world war, which "gave us slav ery Instead of liberty." "We ve got to get down to the old fashioned principles of thrift and industry if we will get out of this depression. If we do this, we won't have time to think of war," he declared. Geneticist Says U. S. Government Is First Big Evolution Experimenter By Stephen J. Mcdonough (Associated Press Science Writer) WASHINGTON, Nov. 21. C A prominent geneticist said today that one of the first large-scale experiments in the direction of human evolution Is being conduct ed by the federal government. This experiment on tha control of tha size of families and the future development of the children and adults which make them up may be unintentional, he said, but it is definitely underway at Green belt, and other re-settlement hous ing projects. Robert C. Cook, editor of the Journal of Heredity, surveyed the Greenbelt project from tha genetic standpoint and said the hand-picking method of selecting families to live in tha new homes had created a carefully controlled experiment CLIS MM 2B-B PBTNCETON, N. J., Nor. 20w44 . At the tag end of a sorry season a football team was bom today at Palmer Stadium. It was a Princeton football team which, already soundly thrashed by Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale, turned on what tha ex perts thought was to hava been another tormenter and gave Navy a 26-8 pasting. Thus tha Tigers salvaged some satisfaction from tha worst cam paign since Fritz Crlsler cam to Princeton. The Princeton line emerged as a well-knit, cohesive unit. Behind It the Princeton backs, notably sophomore Bob Hlnchman, junior Torn Mountain and senior Jack White, worked smoothly to effect Navy's destruction. It was Hlnchman who set the first scoring drive under way. He started It from the Tiger S4 with a 14 -yard end run, finished it with a 13-yard pass to Jack Daniel which the latter toted another 41 yards for the touchdown. Hlnch man then added the extra point. The sophomore halfback's passes also put the Tigers In position for their third score, made by full back Ashby Harper. White and Mountain combined for the other two. WOULD BUY SYSTEM PORTLAND, Nov. . 20 6W Public Utilities Commissioner Ralph C. Clyde asked the city council to consider taking an op tion on the Portland General Elec tric Company. The city previously renewed an option on the North western Electric company with a view to distributing Bonneville current Clyde said J. D. Ross, Bonneville administrator, had agreed to assist. for studying some of the laws of human heredity. 'In these communities the en vironments In which the families live is being created and con trolled to an extent unprecedented In America," Cook said. He added that the families were selected ac cording to rigid requirements ot family size, Income, religion ana "co-operative spirit" which read like the specifications for bids on a government dam or postoffice. xne typical living In a re-settle ment community can be pictured according to these specifications as follows: It consists of a white man between 21 and 29 who Is a gov ernment worker and may be Pro testant, Catholic, or Jew; hjs wife and ona child. His salary is be tween $1000 and $2200 Der rear. The family buys its food and other supplies at co-operative stores In which It will eventually own stock. It gets recreation at the community gymnasium, threatre, playflelds, and swimming pool. Of the entire population at Greenbelt, Cook said 828 families had only one child and only 128 naa lour children. He said he had received reports that "the lease specifies that there are to be no additions to tha family moving into Greenbelt during the first year" of residence there. bar at ihm Amaki.u du a i - " - " - HuiuiYHj mnura 10 we Um n hiMImII.. -- - j , ... v. , uupatcnes cradlttd to It or not otharwlie credited ppr w wo ail uia local newt publlahad herein.
