reet Manners Important
By Deborah Ames
IE day last week I had to
spend some 30 or 40 min
ister one of those abomin-sir-drying
machines that our
n beauty shops use, and
I read the entire supply of
oagarines, I directed my
ion to the window,
shop was directly opposite
trance to one of our largest
fit-known hotels, and since
I Just at the beginning of
ektail hour, I had an oppor-

sat seven out of every ten
filtering or leaving the hotel
women companions were
k on to their elbows in a
kwrd way. Now I had
rs uuraght that this was a
that affected only men of
the older generation, since in the
old days it was considered proper
and necessary to propel women
across streets and in and out of
doorways. To my surprise I. no
ticed that most of the offenders
were men of 26 or 30 young
enough to know better.
In these days of so-called wom
en's rights, it is no longer deemed
necessary to take a woman's arm
unless it is to help her up a steep
step or across a precarious path.
Certainly it is not necessary to
gratf her elbow , and" push her in
and out of doors as I saw more
than one man doing,
In the first place most men are
taller than the women they ac
company, and in taking the wom
an's elbow they tend to push it up
until the poor girl is all out of
shape. And secondly, they usually
start propelling their victim as
though she had no control over
her own movements,
This gown provides sinuous grace that is
almost Grecian in its simplicity and com
plete charm.

By Tanya
THERE'S the southern belle type
of woman who chooses always
the fragil, the glamorous, the en
chantingly bouffant effects in her
evening gowns. For her Paris has
designed some of the most engag
ing of evening dresses. And actual
ly chic and lovely, is the type of
woman who enjoys looking soph
isticated, whose ideal is to teem
poured into her evening frocks.
For her there is this season, silk
jersey as Alix uses it, to accent
the silhouette and to achieve a
picture of smooth and finished
worldliness.
Left) On this page is pictured
one of the most successful of these
jersey evening gowns of the Alix
school. It lies close to the figure,
and where It is draped follows the
lines of the body, providing a sin
uous grace that is almost Grecian
in its simplicity and complete
charm. The Sower-printed jersey
shown here has this daring equality.-
It is the sort of dress one pic
tures in the most fashionable
scenes, the most exciting casinos
of the world.
The background is stark white,
and upon this bloom exotic flow
ers store than life siie and strang
er than any real blooms in the
world. They employ the deepest
reds, the most startling blues, the
warmest yellows to achieve a
completely new and highly un
usual pattern. The design is scat
tered widely over the jersey from
the intricately twisted halter
neckline to the hem of the slim
trailing skirt. W i a style thsi
will be seen wherever the women
who set fashions gather, for by
their preference for its slender
beauty, it is definitely established
as a high style of the season.
(Right) Organia, young, friv
olous, flirtatious, is, also among
the outstanding success of the
spring evening collections. Plain
or printed, it is seen in full-skirted
frocks that sway like Sowers
on the dance floor; Pictured here
is a lovely gown of Bianchini or
ganza in that divine shade of Mae
which is usually called periwinkle
in this country, but for which the
French name of pervenche is even
more suitable. It has a purple
cast, and is a shade that flatters
practically every coloring giving
a clear quality to the skin and
bringing out the natural color in
lips and cheeks. ,
Here the peasant trend is again
observed, for the bodice buttons
primly down the front and the
skirt breaks into billows of full
ness while the sleeves ere of the
traditional puffed variety. The
(tcp deealtetage which Is eves
deeper in the back, i banded is
peasant fashion. Narrow velvet
ribbons are used for this border
effect which appears also on the
sleeve edges. It is formed by com
bining several rows ef the ribbon
in tones of green, rose, and violet
which make a delightful contrast
with the blue of the ergansa. The
dress is provided with a crepe
slip in matching blue.
When evening skirt are not
full at the hem they are apt to
be slit, quite possibly to the knees
In front, sometimes at the aides
or back, EvAi full skirts are fre
quently slit, sometimes cut away
in front to show a csetrastfng
petticoat. In any case, there U
ample freedom for dancing.
Long velvet streamers are an
other detail that adds grace to
evening dresses destined for smart
dancing parties. These are some
times matching and often con
trasting in color with the gown
itself.
The chic ef many sprint as
sembles rests upon th use ef
striking borders. A new took U
given by the treatment ef the
edges ef skirts, sleeves and Jac
kets. Printed borders are artfully
cut and fitted to carry out this
theme, and at other times em
broidery pipings, fringes, beading
or ribbon bands are used.
