As fiery as was his pen for the cause of the Soviet, so embittered was his own life. Orphaned at 5. he fought through years of privation and sickness, until, at the age of 19, he rent a bullet into one lung. Saved by an operation, he began anew to educate himself by prodigious reading, .and to spread his bitter thoughts in writing. Thus, born Alexis Maximovitch Pleshkov, he assumed the name of Maxim Gorki, "Maxim, the Bit ter," and began writing on behalf of the oppressed. When the revolution broke out in 1017, he supported it ardently and soon became the literary mouthpiece for the Soviet tause. So greatly was he admired in Russia that his birthplace of Nizhni Novgorod was renamed Gorki, a gigantic plane was named for the writer, and his books were sold to his c o u n trymen by millions. In 1 9 3 2. Russia issued stamp por traying Gorki and honoring him for his 40 years of literary ctiv itv. I'epyriKhi. isja. m;. n. rilce. W. PORTLAND LIVESTOCK PORTLAND, July 13. (A.P.-U. S. Dept.
