Three of these bridges arc in the Kiixciie trading area, the Florence, Waldport and llecdsport bridges. So heavy was ttie traffic which used this beautiful high way along the Oregon coast, that it soon became evident the real future of the coast area depended on speed ing up the service at these five point because mnny tourists preferred to take another route rather than face the Ion? waits at each ferry. The bridge at Florence, contract prb-e for which was $491,041, is scheduled to be completed Feb. 27, 1!.'W. Construction work Is even with whedule at the present time, it is re Ported. A total of I.'IO men are en ployed on this job. The Waldport bridge will cost $'S5,040 and in scheduled to be com pleted ec. SI, 1035. being the first bridge started. Two hundred men are employed on this bridge. I lie Jleedsport bridge, costing f.i.l,L,;i41 is scheduled to be completed Feb. 27, 10311. There are 11H) men working on this job. Completion of these bridge is ex pected to increase tourist traffic liHig the Oregon coast line, bring added business to coast residents and facilitate the general indusfe-inl growth of the coast section of the tate through more adequate trans portation. Following ts descriptive material fen the five bridges, as furnished by C. It. McCullougb, assistant state highway engineer: Yaquina Bay The bridge proposed at this point 1 located at the extreme mouth of Ympiina Hay in a most spectacular and beautiful Betting. The north ap proach Bpringa from the bluff at a point now occupied by the V. S. Const (.iimrvl Station and is so situ ated as to afford a magnificent view of Yaquina Bay and the great rollers as they break over the bar between the government jetties. From the north approach,, which is approxi mately 100 feet above the level of tho bay, the structure climbs to an elevation such as to span the chan nel at a level affording a vertical clenrnnee of 330 feet for the pas sage of water eraft. The central portion of the struc ture consists of a series of three steel arch spans. The channel span is COO feet between piers and the flanking spans, 350 feet. The bal ance of the structure, which ie 3200 feet in over-all length, 1b composed of reinforced concrete arch and via duct construction. The roadway deck will be 27 feet in width with a pe destrian walk on either side. The cen tral arch, which attain a height of 235 feet above low water at its crown, will span practically all of the navigable channel, and the rather extraordinary proportions of this structure, coupled with the rugged character of its natural setting will render it one of the outstanding beauty spots along the Coast high way. Alsea Bay The bridge proposed at this point , also contemplates a crossing at the month of the bay. The design pre pared contemplates a central group of reinforced concrete tied arch spans having a vertical clearance for water craft of 70 feet and a horizontal clearance of 200 feet for the .central spnn and 143 feet for each of the two adjacent flanking Bpans. The balance of the Rtructuro which has an over-all length of 3000 feet con sists of a series of concrete arches for 450 feet on either Bide and ap proaches of concrete viaduct con struction. Jn the construction of this bridge approximately 30,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1000 tons of metal reinforcement and 140 tons of structural steel will be needed. Here, ae In the case of Yaquina Bay, the north approach springs from a high bluff which affords a magnificient view of the ocean on one eide and of the Alsea river val ley on the other. Siuslaw Bay The structure contemplated at this point consists of a central bas cule having a clear apan .of 140 feet flanked on either Bide by rein forced concrete tied arches having a spaa of 154 feet. The balance of tho structure, which is 1,650 feet in over-all length, consists of rein forced concrete girder constuction. This structure will have a roadway width of 27 feet with two pedes trian walk ways. Approximately 9500 cubic yards of concrete, 500 tonB oi metal reinforcement and 315 tons of structural steel will be required for the construction of this bridge. Umpqua River There are two channels to cross at this point. The northerly channel, known as the Smith River Channel, carries no water craft except small boats and it is proposed to span this channel by means of a series of creosoted pile trestle spans car rying a reinforced concrete deck, A 40 foot opening will be left in the center of this portion of the struc ture for the passage of such water craft as are unable to negotinte the smaller Bpans in the trestle an p roaches. The south terminus of the Smith river crossing is located on Bolon island to cross which a t nel some 550 feet in length will be necessary. The south portal of Uolon island tunnel marks the north ap proach to the principal river crossing which consists of a eteel swing span draw bridge having an over-nil length of 4."0 feet, flanked on either side by two concrete tied arches having spans of 154 feet each. The balance of the structure, which is 2200 feet in over-all length, will consist of re inforced concrete viaduct construe tion. The entire structure will carry a reinforced concrete deck having a rosdway width of 27 feet with a pe destrian walk on either side. In the construction of this bridge it is esti mated that 10.000 cubic yards of concrete, t00 tons of reinforcing metal and S00 tons of structural steel will be required. trat steel cantilever baying an over all length of 1700 feet. Flanking the cantilever on either side is a series of reinforced concrete arch Bpans which arches are flanked, in turn, by reinforced concrete girder ap proach construction. The main chan nel span will have a vertical clear ance of 130 feet over a horizontal distance of 500 feet and a clear hori zontal distance between main piers of 770 feet. The roadway width will be 27 feet with a pedestrian walk on either Bide. In the construction of this bridge, 47,600 cubic yards of concrete. 2,200 tons of reinforcing mctnl and 3.G00 tons of structural steel will be required. In addition to the major structural materials listed for the various bridges, over 12,000,000 feet of lumber will be required, 450,000 lineal feet of piling and 100 tons of machinery. On the basis of prices which prevail at this time, it Is esti mated that the five bridges can be built at a cost of approximately $4,500,000. Construction will require two years time and will furnish di rect employment for 800 to 1,000 men and indirect employment for as many more.
