In this vjj, the tourist enters the area from tie north, coming out at West fir. Ity following the Willamette highway east from Eugene, the area may be on tered from the south through West fir. The following information on this irea was compiled by the Willamette forest service at Eugene. L n- Ifol;'" Elevation iit,, " iuukoul nas more " 1 OT Lamp a 5 mile hike involving a 2H00 foot climb. This hike is recommended for those not wishing to climb one of the major peaks. Should you so desire you can drop down on the east side to the King road and have your car meet you there. Drift Point Camp: B'j miles above Belknap bridge. Close to the conflu ence of Walker creek and the SouUi Fork. Tipsoo Mountain: (Elevation about 4500 feet). A stiff 5 mile climb over a well graded trail which leaves the highway near Walker creek bridge. Popular Trail INDIAN Ridge Trail: Too niileB above Drift Point a horee trail bridge crosses the South Fork which puts you at the start of the main trail leading to the mountains west of the Sooth Fork. This trail is very popular for hikers, hunters and berry pickers. After the stiff climb of the first few miles It Is a high ridge trail. Mnny vantage points along its route from which one may get a splendid view of the surrounding country. Should you wish to make a loop of this hike- continue on south of In dian ltidge Iokout to the intersec tion of the Fall Creek trail and fol low it down to the South Fork which strikes the South Fork road near French Pete Creek. French Pete Trail: A ten mile hike on this trail and you arc in the vi cinity of Olallie Mt. and the airplane landing field. This landing field has no connection with the commercial air lanes. It was built by the forest service to facilitate rapid transporta tion of men in case of forest fires. A forest guard is stationed nearby. Hidden Lake: A seven mile hike on the Fall Creek trail which lenvcB the road a short distance above French Pete Camp. A very popular hike for fishermen. The down timber is much in evi dence between Drift Point Camp and French Pete Camp. This is the result of a storm of cyclonic proportions in 1931. Doe to the extreme fire haiard this area is closed to all entry during critical fire seasons. Roaring River Camp: Elevation 2700 feet, 23 miles from Belknap bridge, 80 miles from Oakridge. Many iish ing trips and hikes of interest mny be made from this camp. Olallie Trail: Leaves the road nenr camp and leads to the Olallie mead ows, guard station and landing field (also reached via the French Pete Trail). Fishing Good Creek Trnil: For finhinff, bik ing and sijrht seeing this trail is highly recommended. For several mile it follows fairly e1o.se to Klk Creek, then makce the climb to the Mimmit where it joins the Oregon Skyline Trail. Oregon Skyline Trail: A spur lea (1b from this trail up to Pack Saddle Mountain, elevation 0138 feet. This land is a veritable innse of lakes through which the Skyline Trail winds a delightful course.
