Having eliminated Morden from the picture, what would oe nia logical next step?" "Tou mean the woman?" Bleeker naked. "Exactly," Griff aaid. "He would see that tbe woman was removed from the picture. Either by seeing tnat her Hps were silenced, or by see ing that she waa placed in a position where she was not readily accessible to tnose who were investigating Mor den's death. Remember this, that the murderer knew that Morden waa working for the newspaper. He knew that Morden was working to uncover evidence against Oathay. He doubt, less surmised that Morden waa mak ing daily reporta. He didn't know the nature of those reports. Morden told you over the telephone that he didn't wish to mention any namea but the man who murdered him and the crime indicates tnat it waa a man didn t know how much Morden had told you." Bleeker nodded thoughtfully, "Therefore," Griff aaid, "I would suggest that you do two things. That you concentrate upon finding Mary uriggs and that you make a complete investigation of every disappearance case where the party who disappeared waa a woman, and that the time of dlaappearar.ee was within the last 4S hours. Bleeker'a eyea glinted with appre. ciation. "That," he said, "is an idea." There waa a moment of silence. Bleeker took the pipe from his mouth, scraped out the aebea and dropped tne pipe into his pocket. "Tou understand. Griff," he said, "this la the first time we've ever had occasion to employ yon. I know something of your work from a atand point of results, but I don't know how you work. Now just how much of this investigation will yon take over, and just how much are we ex pected to do?" "Let's not have any misunderstand ing." Griff said. "You're to do it all." "All?" aaked Bleeker. "Every bit of it," Griff aaid. "All I do la furnish ideaa and correlate information. You get the facts. I fit them together and direct the search for additional facts." "It virtually . amounts," Bleeker said, "to putting our men at your disposal. "You can hire private detectives if yon wish," Griff said. "Our men are better than private deteetivea. "Then you can nae them if it's economically advantageoua for you to oo ao. aat I don't gather anv facta, All I do Is interpret the facts that are gathered and suggest the direc tion in which a search ahould be prosecuted for additional facts. Also, I play human checkers." "Human checkers?" Bleeker asked. "That's what I call It," Griff aaid. "A lot of detectives monkey around with dead clews. They take some inanimate object and attach a great deal of importance to it. I don't. I feel that the aolution of every crime dependa upon the animate, rather than the inanimate. Not that I over look inanimate clewe. I try to notice such clewa and to give them due Im portance, but I don t attach an undue importance to them. On the other hand, I don't try to follow a cold trail while our quarry sits still. I try to devise waya and meana of keeping the quarry restless, keeping It moving around. Then it's alwaya leaving a fresh trail. In other words, I play checkers with them. I keep moving my men ao that they are forced to make some move. if you ve ever hunted deer, you know what I mean. The hunter who triea to follow a cold trail doesn't get his bucks as regularly aa the man who aits down some place on a rock and makes the deer keep moving."
