Special) If railroad activity Is an Indication of prosperity, Cottaae Grove should be coming In for its ehsre, for the Oregon Pacific & East ern railway, which serves the How River Talley, ha more business than for several years. Tola la due to ac tivity in the lumber buaineaa. Years ago several large mills were In operation on this line and two mills in the city were aerved with logs that came over the line. Aa timber tracta were cut out the mills were closed, then the bottom dropped out of the lumber market. There are yet great tracts of timber tributary to the railroad and now the Bohemia Lum- ber company, with a new null, Is in full operation at Culp Creek and the Scott mill, to be operated under the name of the Waldcn Lumber com pany, and owned by Eastburn Bros., who came here from Junction City, is expected to go into operation next Monday at Wo Men. An old mill at this location has been Inactive for many years. The Anderson & Mlddleton Lumber company, in the hands of receivers. has a contract to cut 400,000,000 feet of government timber near Layng Creek ranger station and sovernl years ago spent a large sum of money preparing a millsite near Dorcnn and building railway into the timber. There have been rumora that the owners of this company are nearly cut out on Fuget Sound and contenv plate operations here, but no direct word has been received here. This company also owns large tracts of timber near Ita millsite. Repairs to roadbed and bridges are being made by the railway. The city's only other railway, own ed by J. H. Chambers and Son, Is active in handling logs for the Cbam bera mill located in this city. This Is not a common carrier but the O. P. & E. Is. Plans All Set For Catholic Picnic Sunday The Eugene council of the Knights M Columbus are sponsoring the an nual Catholic picnic at Riverside park Sunday, July 23. Al Hoffman la gen ual chairman of the large social gathering, which will bring Catholics and their friends from Eugene, Cot tage Grove, Springfield, Monro and Harrlsbnrg. Following the luncheon at noon the annual baseball game between the married and single men will be play ed. Dr. F. A. Reiling will endeavor to lead the married men to victory after the two losses of 10.11 and 1032. William Potter feela certain that the ingle men will make it three straight victories. Dr. F. A. Helling In 1931 led the Ingle men to victory after the mar ried men had won every baseball en counter from 1025 to 1030. Batter, ies of the two teams will be announc ed before the opening of the game. After the baseball game, the ath letic gamea will be played. This part of the program will be in the hands of Joseph Krcmmel. chairman, assisted by Phillip A. Oent, George Miller, Fred Kreata and W. W. Brlstow. Transportation will be taken care of by Ed Knrth, Joseph Klrrhoff and Ernest Brunner. Between 10 and 11 a. m. cars will be at St. Mary'a Cath olic church for people desiring to at tend the picnic with no means of transportation. Fairway Princesses Pay Eugene Visit Two pretty emissaries from the Portland Junior Chamber of Com merce, Misses Elva Salmonson and Nina Perkel, arrived In Eugene todny to extend a personal invitation to all golf enthusiasts to attend the Na tional Public Liinks golf championship at Portland August 1 to 5 inclusive. Misses Salmonson and Perkel were recently chosen princesses in the Queen of Fairways contest held by the Portland Junior Chamber as a means of publicizing the forthcoming championship piny.
