The banquet is given each year to honor achievements in the fields of literature and the arts. The speaker for this year's ban quet will be Amos Burg, former Uni versity of Oregon student, who hos won considerable fame for his travels mid explorations and as a writer to National Geographic. i ThA place of tho banquet is yet to bo fixed. Also one for every prayer I have prayed as I looked at the thin gay pu its laid out on the bed. that the weather would be warm and dry. That ia the trouble with Halloween. Kven the smart liveries sold now from Captain Ktdd's ferocious outfit to Little Bo Peep's wide skirts are made. of percale or sateen or muslin. or gauze. And children thus decked out won't wear coats over them on the street if they can help it. A Fairy In a Coat! T remember one night when I kept putting my head out of doors to teat the temperature. Oue girl was. be ing a fairy. I had been coaxed into mnking n butterfly affair of pale blue tulle and even painting a pair of sum nier pumps to marh. Knch time I had a look outdoors things grew worse. It was not only cold but tt had started to drizale. The children were having a parade There were to be! prizes How could T fnco a little girl who had been in a dnze of happiness for days at the prospect of being a henutirul blue fairy, with the words. "You cant go out tonight, or if you do you must wear overshoes and a coat? I called up headounrters but yes, there would be a parnde! Finally I telephoned some other mothers in the samo predicament. All were as cowardly as T was about fac ing their children with the bad news, Persuasion Out of Question The Indian suit that hung beside the blue dress offered less of a prob lem. A swenter or two might make the small wearer look like a very fat in dian. but that was all. No other mo ther, H seems, had quite my probltvn of a tulle dress. Most of their chil dren could be "stuffed." The fniry-to-be owned a sweater, i honvy one with a turtle neck and i stretching quality. But it was red, bricht red. Could I persuade my child that very often fairies wore heavy sweaters under their their gauzy clothes red ones? And that gnloshes were quite the thing in fairy land? Perhaps I could. The parade was being very short and a crowd was coming back to our house for games later on. She could then shed tbe tras and shine in her pristine beauty. Cowardice or Common Sense? Then my daughter walked In. And the said. "Mother, T can t wear that dress tonight. It's freezing cold and all rainy." Lord love us! The child had more aensf than T had. She dreased up but didn't go out. And Inter she wss belle ot the ball at our little party. I often think over that night and my cowardice. What wis T thinking about to try to bargain with my com mon sense, that way? This story has no particular point except one thing. If the weather is mid or damp on Halloween, bundle up the children well under their gv rig gings. Tut thick shoes on their feet, or overshoes. And don't be a goose like me and make pneumonia dresses, or you'll be making pneumonia "jackets" later. And if the children must go out make it quick and snappy. Indoor parties lye best. Bethel 4-H clubbers held achieve ment day at Uie club house Thursday evening. They received their pins and celebrated the completion of their year's club work. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Fulmer are leaving Monday morning for Califor nia where they will visit relatfvea at Los- Angeles, Riverside, Merced and other California cities. Mr. Fulmer has recently been retired and Is greatly enjoying his full time vaca tion. They plan to bo back in about three weeks. , . Two 4-H clubs have lately been or ganized .in Bethel school.
