(U.R) The Pennsylvania state convention of tbe American Legion today adopt ed a resolution condemning the meth ods of xpuls-Jon used against the bonus expeditionary forces in Wash ington. The convention also demnnded im mediate payment of the bonus, re peal of the 18th amendment and modification of the Volstead law and the Snyder state law for enforcement of prohibition. Efforts to adopt a minority report of the resolutions committee which would have deleted a paragraph cri ticizing President Hoover for the ex pulsion of bonus seeking veterans from Washington were shouted down. Boy's Body Found Hanging From Tree GR ANSON. Kjr.. Aug. 20. (U.R) The body of Roy Rickey, missing 10-year-old mountain boy, was found to day hanging from a tree at Soldier, not far from where he lived. His body showed msrka of severe beatings, Coroner C. W. Anderson, of Carter county, said. The coroner said he was undecided if the boy was dead when suspended from the tree. Upon tbt coroner's advice, county officials took into custody for ques tioning tbe hoy's father, Clyde; his stepmother. Bitha. 37, and a neigh bor, Jim Andy Day. Footprints of an adult found near tbe tree tallied with shoes worn by Day, the coroner said. There were no traces of a boy's footprints, he added. Glider Falls, Youth Unconscious 18 days G LEND ALE. This feature will be in vogue all week and starts Sunday with the Greta Gar bo engagement. Officer Killed in Battle With Thugs PORTA LES, N. M., Aug. 20. (U.R) One officer was killed and a deputy and a bandit suspect were wounded this morning in a gun battle 4S miles southeast of Portales when officers went to the Pebsworth rnneh to ar rest three men suspected of robbing the Olton, Tex., bauk on July f. Hnrvey Bolin, deputy sheriff of Olton county was killed. R. L. Hollis, -special deputy, of Portales, was wounded. One of the bandit suspects was wounded but officers were not cer tain which one it was. The three men sought were Jack Sullivan, A. C. Hunsucker and Lee Pebsworth. It was reported here this after noon that the wounded man had been captured at Twtum, N. M. When officers went to the ranch tbe three men opened fire on them it was said. The officers had only pi to s but returned the fire and hit one. They were forced to stand by and watch the bandits make a getaway in a car. Oregon Carpenters Favor Union Wages ASTORIA, Ore., Au. 20. (U.R) Oregon state council ot carpenters In annual session here today unanimous ly adopted a resolution opposing pay ment of less than union scales for la bor on all public works. The council re-elected F. 11. Allen president and David Duff secretary-treasurer. Both are of Portland. As the carpenters concluded their two-day session today, local labor of ficials prepared to greet 200 or more delegates1 expected Monday for the annual convention of the state fed era tion of labor. Osborne, executive secretary, is here already for the carpenters' session. Washington Solon For Resubmission SEATTLE. Aim. 20. (P) Sen ator Wesley L. Jones, republican. Ill- sued a statement from his campaign headquarters here today in which he said while his personal views in favor of prohibition had not changed, he behoved the ISth amendment should be resubmitted to the people. Ho added: "I shall vote to do ao at the first opportunity." The senator, long a dry and author of the "5 and 10" sentence law for prohibition violators, subsequently modified, declared: "The 18th amend ment is a part of the constitution of the United States. Congress cannot modify it or any other part of the constitution; congress can only sub' mit a proposed change to the people for their decision. "The people have an absolute right to exercise their ultimate power in deriding any constitution question whenever such a question baa become of national interest. Compton resurfacing contract for the McKenxie highway from Doyle hill to Hendricks bridge who have been boarding at the A. A. Campbell home left the latter part of the week for the work farther up the McKen zie. Work In this section la finished for the time being but a finer coat of gravel will be spread on the road In a few days. Misses Mary Smithson and Jean Thompson of Springfield who have been visiting Dorothy and Marjory Hart the past week left Saturday morning for their homes. On Wednesday the Baptist Sunday school had their annual picnic iu the woods on the Willard Gray place north of town. A number of tbe men went down early in the morning and spent the day cutting wood to keep the "church fires burning" during the winter. At noon the women and members of the sabbath school drove Klown and all enjoyed the picnic din ner and in the afternoon I lie children and young folks played games while the older ones visited. On Thursday evening Ihe B, T. P. V, of the Baptist church had their regular monthly social aud business meeting at Bodkers grove. A num ber of young folks were down and a splendid time was enjoyed. The Cotton Blossom SingerB from the Piney Woods schools in the south are to be at the Baptist church on Monday evening to give one of their concerts of negro spirituals. This is to be the same quartet of young men that were here, last year. Mr. and Mrs. George Watrous and Jessie. Grandma. Watrous and Gor don Watrous drove to Medford Fri day afternoon. Mrs. Viola Reels ami Miss Marv of Corvallis visited at the Alvin Reets home on Friday, Mrs. Reels was en route home from n few days visit with an aunt at Reed, Ore.
