Several hund red persons were at the camp for the various sports Sunday, Mr. 'Thompson reported. - The Eugene croup inspected the facilities at the Mt. Hood location and will later ohlaj) plans and specifica tions for ski jump and toboggan slides from the 1'artland engineer who designed the Mt. Hood facilities. The purpose her is to locate an area in which winter sports could be held near Eugene, probably near Scott lake or at Pole bridge cabin and 'Hand lake, Mr. Thompson said. While plans are still in a formative stale, it is the hope of the chamber committee to get action as soon aB possible in constructing two ski jumps, a ski run and toboggan slide, to be used by the public free of coBt. The commercial concession would probably install fac ilities also, Mr. Thompson Boid. Mr. Thompson will head a group going into the MeKcnzie area in the near future and pick out a location for winter sports. Gertruds I Bxow, county home demonstration agent, has announced 'her schedule for the week of Jan. 10. On Monday she went to Bethel to ' begin course in economical meals and family eating habits. The meeting was held at 10:30 a. m. In the school 'house. On Tuesday she will meet with women of Noll at 10 a. m. at the ihome of Mrs. Stella Huston for the . second meeting of the economical .meals course. . Aged Oak, Rotting, Felled By Steele A giant black oak estimated to be at leaBt 450 ycara old, was felled AVednesday on the ranch of William Steele, two miles west of Eugene. The old oak tree was seven feet In diameter at the base and was 120 feet high. One limb was 80 feet long and two and one-half feet In dlom eter. This limb was over the Steele residence, and as Steele suspected It of being rotten and fearing that It would crash down on tho house, the tree had to be -cut down. Tho big brunch wns found to be completely rotted, for it fell to pieces when the tree was brought down. Felling of the tree wns in itself no small task. Fourteen roots averaging two feet in diameter hnd to be chop ped off before the tree wns felled. Several small powder charges were made In tho process also. Sleelo estimated that the tree will cut up into 12 cords of tiro wood. Reports from 51 cities showed costs to be two per cent lower on December 15 than on the same date in November, and 16 2-3 per cent less than on December 15, 1030. The retail price studies take 1013 as the 100 per cent year. The index was 137.2 per cent on December 15, 1030, nnd 114.3 per cent on Decem ber 15 ast. The average for 1931 won 121.3 per cent. The drops in food costs ranged over the period of a year from 10 per cent in Portland, Ore., to 23 per cent nt Springfield, 111. The figures included the following declines: San Francisco, 16 per cent; Mult Lnko City, 14 per cent; Denver nnd has Angelea, 13 per cent; Seattle, 11 per cent; and Butte, Mont., and Portland, Ore., 10 pej cent. Jumping in almost perfect form, Mikkelson, who represented tbe Norge Ski club, Chicago, marked up leaps of 157 and 160 feet for a total of 317 feet .exceeding by one foot the 155 nnd 1C1 totals of Oimoen, appearing for the Sioux Valley club. Mikkelson was given first in the unofficial standings, due to his form in the air and on landing. Although forced to take second place in the ra tings so far, Oimoen turned in the longest jump of the day 161 feet which was 22 feet abort of the local record. The average of points scored on both dnys will determine the members of tho four-man team which will rep resent tho United States as jumpers in the Olympics winter games at Lake I'lacid, N.
