In hia hurry ba had aeiied an empty one and stuffed it in hia pocket without looking and the Jupiter necklace waa still here, underneath her hand. She might bar. picked it nn and put it on again afterward it occur red to her that that had been the aeneible thing to do. But at the mo ment ah. waa too panicky. Almost aa If be read her thoughts, D. Lome suddenly noticed th. aba ence of th. rubies. "You hay. loat your necklace?" b. asked in a choking voice, point ing to her throat. "Ob, no," she managed to laugh. "I waa ao warm, and the atones ar. so heavy, I juet took It off." He drew in a deep Bucking breath and leaned back, hia ainister face re laxed. She eaw his eyes creeping over her, the table, her handbag, searching it out. "But you had me frightened for a minute!" he chided her. "Such a valuable atring could easily become lost in a crowd like this." "I asked Mr. Batea to lock it up for me," abe aaid. deliberately, an swering his unspoken question. Ilia face hardened, seemed to lock to. gether aa If lie were shutting in his feelings with a titanic effort. He was allent so long that Mary began to wonder if he were going to speak to her again at all. At that moment the orchestra began to play "To Tears." Unsmiling, he tapped out bis "ig. aret and aaid "It ia the tango. Will you dnnce it with me?" "Will you pick up my glove, please?" Mary asked, on sudden in apiration. "I think I dropped it over there." Surprised, he bent over and made an effort to locate the glove, which lay where abe had thrown it under the table. There waa nothing for him to do but get down on hia knees and pick it up. In that moment Mary unclaaped her purse on the table, slipped the necklace into it and clasped it again. She waa shaping out a fresh hand kerchief to account for that loud snap of the handbag's fastner if he bad heard it when he arose, flushed and patently illpleaaed. from hia chivalr ous errand. Reluctantly ahe arose and let T)e Loma'a arm encircle her. She dreaded to dance with Dirk there, watebjng. Sbe couldn't bear it if he looked at her again like that. Th. floor began to clear, the en tire room to grow stul, watcbing them with breathless attention. "Brayo!" someone cried, and someone else, un able to resist tb. rhythm, began to anap his fingers. Instantly a crackl ing accompaniment grew up to swell the efforts of the trape player, out doing himself on the castaneta. Dirk waa watching, now. Mary saw hia eyes, like slits, through the fog of cigaret-smoke. His jaw waa Bet, hia face expressionless. Cor nelia watched. ' too, but unwillingly, scornfully. Mary felt a wicked thrill of joy. De Loraa, apparently wishing to impress the open-mouthed Ethel, now wheeled about and aimed their atapa deliberately at Dirk a table. The bov. ering spotlight that followed them included the three watching faces in white, revealing glow. She felt herself whirled about, bar body bent back until the thick red bob of her hair awung free. Above her De Loma'a grinning, gloating face appeared for t second, like aome thing in a dream . . , then ah. felt hia lips on her mouth. In the next instant Dirk, white faced, hia eyea biasing with murder ous fury, had aent De Loma hurtling backward with one hard Wow. From the floor, where she sank when De Loma'a arm released its grin about, her. she saw Dirk hurl himself at the reeling man a second time . . . ssw De Loma throw back hia coat and reach for his gun. "Look out!" abe screamed and threw her arm before her .yea. Sbe crouched where ahe waa, terror atrlcken. waiting for th. abot aha was aure would come.
