MEDFURD SET FDB MEPFORD. Dec. 20. (SneclaD Flushed with a late-season rally bicb carried them throuah four football victories, Medford high ia entering Into Christmas vaca tlon basketball practice with a vim in prepara tion for Its first Inter scholastic game with Uni versity high of Eugene. The game ts schedul ed for Saturdny December 81. ill the Medford armory. Mixiforrt. for several year, tne cream of the football world in Ore gon, took a slump in ll'i' nnu lookcil like a reneater in 1930 by droppiug its first three games. I tder toe couiuinea enoria oi mice coaches, Darwin hi. Burgher of Idaho, henU mentor, anu nia as sistants B. R. Finch and Ed Kirt- ley, the Tigera rouuded into shape in mid season. Salem played a 12-12 tie. Klamath Falla was beateo 21-0 and 14-0 and then Medford upset U don hv trouncing Jack bliss' Ashland eleven .u-(. An eariy aneai by Grants Pass, coached by Lecnard Mayfield, formerly of Springf.eld, kept .Medford from atldlng another southern Oregon title to lta long list In basketball Coach Burgher la oinnctetl to turn out a lair quintci hue no state chamu outfit becaure ol lack of outstanding material, nrst practice saw 60 men trying out for the team. These have been divided into three sounds of 20, with a coach for each. On account of the huge turnout practices are held by .nuts, afternoon and evening. Burgher played four year, of basketball and football at Ic'aho, captaining the grid team his last year and playing forward on the quintet. What sort of a system he will drill into his men Is problematic a. yet, but with bia big list of subs he will probably try to weaj down the men from University high. Odd Hughes and Chuck Clay, ends on the football team, play forwards for Medford. At center Jack Cald well seems a safe bet with Ivan Harrington and Bud Thoma" at guards. Thomas, whose brother rlay ed with the Oregon Frosh this fall, was an all-conference end, while Harrington waa quarter. Should any of these men fad to deliver Rurglier can call on Dietrich or Wilton White for center, George Harrington or Joe Patton at for wards, or Latham end Smi'.n ' at guards, all practically as good as the first string lineup. Medford's men will probably be considerably larger thnn the Univer sity high boys, most of them averag ing close to six feet. Xo outstanding shota were developed In the class games, but practico may bring out someone to fill the shoes of Meivyn Chsstnin or Al Melvin. all-state forwarda from Medford In past years. Sington, all-American, Rewards Mother's Faith By WILLIAM BRAUCHER NEA Sarv.ee SporU Editor A little more thno iTen years atro ft pudry boy of 13 with black tye limped into the kitchen of his home In Birmingham, Ala. His mother consoled him In his af fliction with kind words and de licious pie That was jnst after Freddie Bln ton's first football scrimmage. The young man who was chosen almost unanimously aa All-American tackle this year had to play with boys older nnd tougher than himself when he first took up the game, at Phillips High, In Birmingham, nts mother, Mrs. Hallye Blngton. Kara him pie to eat and kind words of encouragement to hear. "You'll got a lot of hard knocks, son,' said Mrs. Biogton, "but keep right on fighting." So Freddie, though sadly bruised nnd generally pushed around during his first foot hull scrimmage, went right back after more the neit day. Now Famous When tlie mighty foothflU team of Washington Slate and Alabama clash in the Rose Bowl at Bnaadcna New Year's day, there will be no pla.ter to whom has come greater fame than the pudgy boy whose first game of footbnll sent him home with tears tn his eyes. Up In the stands, among the thou sands whose cheers will pRy tribute to Sington's footbnll prowess, will be his mother, her eyes showing her pride In the boy's success. Rlvnls for the position Sington played in his high erhool days used to give the judgy Jewish boy some rough afternoons But Freddie fought, learned the game, became proficient, nnd began giving a few others some rough afternoon. For Fred die, today, with his six feet three and 1217 pounds, isn't pudgy boy any longer. Ho represents 217 pounds of snimated buss-saw. Mother Is Widow About the time Freddie entered Alabama Mrs. Sington was left ft widow. Her son wanted to abandon his scholastic career, take a Job tn the workaday world and. help along financially. Mrs. Sington, howerer, had other ambitions. Just as sure as she waa that he would become a great foot ball player, she believed that some day he would be a great lawyer. It was a fight for her to keep the boy In college, but she did not shrink from the struggle. Thus fur Freddie has rewarded her faith, not only by earning a high place among the country's gridiron great, but by excellence In his academic work. Every year his name haa ap peared on the Alabama honor roll. His schoolwork recently was recog nized by election to Thi Beta Kappa, a scholarly honor few football men attain. Into his 20 years of life young Sing ton has crowded victory and honor. But in his fight he has been given valuable help by his mother. When they cheer him in the Rose Powl, they'll be cheering her, too, for she. In hero Freddie n heroine. SERVE YOURSELF AND RAVE WILLIAMS SELF SERVICE STORE 77 E.
