Gates The Santiam Telephone company elected A. D. Scott as director at the annual meeting last week. The operator's salary was raised and general repairs on lines were authorized. Gates The Woman's club will meet Thursday when "Improving Plan Revival Flax Fiesta At Mtl Angel MT. ANGEL, Teb. !l2-(Special) The flax festival, the anuual cele bration for which Mt. Angel was famous in pre-war days, may be resumed this! year. Walter Smith, president ofi the Business Men's club, told members Monday noon he favored resurrecting the cele bration but suggested considering the matter before the next club meeting. ? j Walter Kriise, secretary, read a report on the March of Dimes campaign,, crediting J Mt. Angel with having raised a. net total of $411.96. This included a net $190.32 out Of a grand intake of $369' for the rianrc, tfte collections from the school and; the regular milk bottle collection. The garbage disposal dilemma in which Mt. Angel finds it.sclf at the present .was brought up but left unsolved. Bean said all that could be done was being done by the city council. A number of plans have proved unfeasible and the council is now trying to buy land that will meet! all the re quirements of the health depart ment for the purpose of using it as a dumping ground. To date no vailable land has been found. Claude Smith S 1c, home from the Pacific on a 30-day leave, was a special guest. Tony Tracger discussed the recreational center and suggested action be taken which would permit utilizing funds subscribed by the various organizations. Will Enforce PurKin" Zones IJn Silvertoti SILVF.RTON, Feb. 1 2.'-f Special) At a special meeting of the city council Monday night, City Man ager Robert Borland was instruct ed to ask S the police of the city to enforce, the existing parking ordinance jn order to relieve con gestion in Che fire zone. The ordin ance calls! for two hour parking only. Contamination of local drinking water will; be thoroughly investi gated, coyncilmen decided. The board of health reported that there were certain sources of contamina tion along the Abiqua watershed which are' a menace to the local water supply. A survey in this area will be made at once. The council recommended that the license for the new owners of George's Cafe be granted. The cafe retains the same name. In the matter of repair of Third street, petitions for which were tabled last meeting, the council voted to follow the same policy as in former cases. The city will grade the street and the property owners can gravel or have other improvement they desire. Valley Obituaries Mabel Hart Rick LEBANON, Feb. 12-(Special)-Mabel Hart Rick, born in Grove City, 111., In 1886, died en route to the hospital Saturday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in the Howe Huston chapel at 2 p. m. The Rev. Wright of the Ev angelical church will officiate. Survivors are six children, Rich ard Rick and Mrs. Floyd Clement in Nebraska; Ray, Owen and Alice Rick of Albany and Duane Rick of Seattle, and eight grandchildren. Joseph' A J Lam plot SCIO, Feb. 12-(Special)-Fuii-eral services for Joseph A. Lamp lot, M, who died here February 10, will be held Thursday, Feb ruary 14 at 2 p.m. In the hall in Richardson Gap, six miles south east of here. The Rev. Victor L. Loucks will officiate and Howe Houston Funeral home will be In charge. Burial will be in Frank lin Butte cemetery. Born in 1853 Lamplot came to the United States 03 years ago and to Scio 47 years ago. He lived on the farm since that time where his wife died many years ago. Survivors are a son, Frank of Scio; four daughters, Mrs. An na Votruba, Montana; Mrs. Nettie Spolek and Emma Lamplot, Kla math FallS; and Mrs. Lydia Bu resh, Scio;; also eight grandchil dren and four great grandchildren. State A Liberty St. Phone JIU Saiitiam Flax Is Not Desired By State Plant JEFFERSON, Feb. 12 (Special) The state flax industry has all the acreage it needs and will not consider any in this area, L. L. Laws, manager, has notified San tiam Flax Growers in Jefferson. The. letter addressed to the flax glowers says in part "It is our desire to help other plants in any reasonable manner to oer ate successfully. A hick of acre age is one of the greatest handi caps to any plant, so we urge that you help by furnishing some acreage to the Santiam Flax growers. "Von may see the day that you will be very proud of the flax plant in your community and the only way to keep it In a healthy condition is to support it." In reply Al fieri Lentschncr, manager of the Santiam Flax Growers has written Laws, "We wish to thank the state flax in dustry and the members of the Oregon state board of control for their withdrawal from our terri tory. We believe this to be in full accord with the act of the legis lature which created the state flax industry. State competition was our most feared obstacle and this considerate move will open the way for our complete suc cess. The state flax industry may in time be proud of their consid erate gesture." Jefferson Lumber company mill, was injured Monday morn ing when struck on the head by a block of wood. X-rays showed no bones broken.
