Attorney. General George Neuner inled Monday for Director E. L. Peterson of the Mate department of agriculture. Dud ley Strain officiating. Mrs. Kapphahn resided in Port land for the past few years and she was brought to a Salem hos pital two months ago. Born in Marshalltown. Iowa, 1887, she was the daughter of Frank and Sophia Anderson, and first came to Salem with her fam ily in 1Q05. In 1907 she was mar ried to E. L. Kapphahn, who died in 192S. Henry Mattson To Enter Page AttorneyOffiee After serving 17 years in the Marion county clerk's office as deputy and more recently as act ing county clerk, Henry Mattson has offered his resignation and on January 15 will take a position in the law office of Rollin K. Page snd Alice II. Page in the Pioneer Trust building, Salem. Since his beginning with the clerk's office in 1929, Matson has handled all departments, and dur ing County Clerk Harlan Judd's absence in the army, Mattson was acting clerk from March, 1942 to November, 1943. He has been studying law in Portland and" believes that with the acceptance of his new post he can more easily carry on his studies. County Clerk Harlan Judd said that Newman Fee, recently dis charged from the army air corps in which he served for five years as bombardier and chief clerk, will fill the deputyship vacated by Mattson. Term on File Formal application: for commu tation of the death sentence to life imprisonment in the case of An drew Dennis, convicted of first degree murder for the slaying of his mother-in-law, Mrs. ' Anna Belle McNalley, in a Portland apartment house in January 1944, was filed with Gov; Earl Snell Monday. A copy of the applica tion was referred to the state board of parole and probation. Dennis is scheduled to die Jn the lethal gas chamber at the state penitentiary later this month. A previous death sentence was set aside by the state supreme court because Judge Martin Hawkins, Multnomah, county cir cuit court, failed to issue a death warrant. Dennis was re-sentenced recently. Wade, assistant attorney general, next week will be assfgned to serve as attorney for the state unemployment com pensation commission, Attorney General George Neuner announced Monday. Wade recently returned here after serving in the military forces overseas. Mrs. I lendersoii, Stricken While On Visit, Dies ' Mrs. Milton Henderson, moiher (A Leo H. Henderson, manager of the Grand thentre, died at a lo cal hospital Sunday. Mrs. Henderson with her hus band, came to Salem December 15 to visit. She sufered a stroke upon her arrival here and had been bedfast since that time. The Hen dersons resided in Salt Lake City. Survivors are the husband; three sons, Leo H. Henderson, Sa lem, Clinton R. and Jerry Hender son, both of Salt Lake City; six daughters, Mrs. W. O. BartJet, San Francisco, Mrs. F. C.
