EMmAn, who was captured by th Japanex on Corragldor In 1942 and remained prisoner until after V-J day, is on a 90-day rehabilitation leave visiting; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Eshleman of 494 S. Winter st, Salem. 1 The sergeant, who enlisted In the imarlne corps after being graduated from Salem high school in 1939, first served with the Sixth and Eighth regimenU of the fleet maiiae force at Saa Diego, later served as a volunteer with the Fourth regiment at Shanghai, and went to the Philippines when the marines were ordered out at China. i When first captured, Eahleman wag interned at Cabanatuan pris on camp on, Luzon, and in 1944 wasj taken to Japan where he learned to mine coal the Japa nese way. He said his most excit ing experience comprised a flight of B-298 firing over his prison encampment, dropping food and cigarettes to liberated Americana. The sergeant Is to be discharged from the marine corps at the ex piration of his leave and intends to resume his schooling. Men of thj Petrof Bay earned their share lot awards. A Navy Cross, five Legion of Merit Med als, . 37 Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars were among the decorations presented to crew members. i Warren Carkiu Hume J. Warren Carkin, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Carkin, has retnrned home following his discharge Decerrrber 14 in Ala bama. He came went by way of New York where he visited his two brothers. Earl and Vernon. Warren Carkin was inducted in September, 1942, and received his basic training at Camp Croft, and was with the 35th Infantry divi sion 9ent overseas in May, 1944 He was wounded after 10 dayi in Normandy and spent consider able time in the hospital in Kng land and came back to the state in July, 1943. He was employed on the Stacey fox farm and will work there again. Novotny Comes Home Lumir Will Novotny, torpedo man's mate, first class, USN'R, 662 N. 14th St.. Salem, Ore., has returned ,to the United States for discharge , from the navy, after serving overseas -' on the USS Wachapregue, a PT tender. Oversea for 17 months, the Wachapreague operated in the southwest Pacific srhd sent out liundreds of patrols to attack Jap shipplngi and shore installations in New Guinea, the Philippines and Borneo, j She also took part In the Initial invasion of Leyte island, Lingayen gulf, and Tarakan, Borneo, and participated in the battle of Suri gao straits. Although attacked by suicide planes, the ship suffered no casualties or damage. CpL Wallace L Mensoa. gen ef Mrs. OLiMonson of 386 Rural av., Salem, has arrived home after 34 months . in the service. He wag given his honorable discharge last week at Fort Lewis. The corporal was overseas 20 months and holds the American and European-African service ribbons, the good con duct and victory medals and four battle stars. He was with the engi neers.
