Bureau scientists say they . ex pect to issue more specific- ad visories than in previous years, including the last big hurricane year of 195S. That year more than a billion dollars In damage and 1,500 deaths, including III in the continental United States, were caused by near-record 10 howl ers from out of the tropical dol drums. Bureau men . are expecting to arrow down their warning to an average of 300, miles of coastal length, compared with about Soo average two yean ago.. ; Last year, only two hurricanes actually threatened the continen tal United Stales, and only one of them Flossie actually struck. . Meatkly Stateawat Caaaidered Bureau scientists are even ex ploring the possibility of issuing a statement as much as a month in advance of the "general prob ability" of hurricanes affecting a particular coastal area. - Current research Is based oii promising experience during the last few years with 30-day out looks lor weatner conditions in general. Up to now, these outlooks have not attempted -to forecast hurricane poesJbUitles. - -i But bureau scientists have been analyzing past outlooks for hurri cane months, ' comparing them with conditions observed during actual., hurricane. They have even made a few experimental trial runs during a hurricane Va son. , They say, however, that results, while promising, require exten sive analysis before any decision can be reached on whether such technique could be placed in operational use this year, if in deed at an. Instruments for measuring winds speed and direction right at the water's edge as distin guished from gadgets which rec ord these items at stations locat ed farther inland. It has been" found that a dis tance of 10 miles from the coast' can make a difference of 30 miles an hour less in recorded wind speed, but that is only an appar ent drop as respects the over-all fury of the storm and therefore gives a false idea. Topography of the land accounts in part for such differences in readings. So a line of 90 new water-edge recorders will be installed this spring and summer all the way from Brownsville, Tex., to Port land, Me. Remete-Caalrel Tidal Caagea . ... 1. A new system of remote-con trol tidal gauges will be installed at various points along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. They will pro vide a continuous record of water- level heights to weather fore casters at stations located some distance from the ocean's edge. The "hold - over," mostly un tried weapons of last 'year, con sist mainly of two giant long- range radars at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Nantucket, Mass., plus some relatively recent re search findings- on the antics 'of nurricanes. f The radar's 300-mile range is credited with:' having helped greatly toward issuing a warning to the island more than 30 hours before the storm struck and a more specific' watch-out-for-your life-and-property warning some IS flour before the winds hit. If the bureau ultimately decides to put out special long-range hur ricane forecasts, theje would add to the agency's growing list of special forecasts, ranging - from fruit frost predictions to tiro weather outlooks, and from fore cast for cranberry growers to special snow forecasts to help mow removal planners.
