State Highway Board Shifts Meets to Salem (Story als page 1) The State Highway Commission at its monthly meeting in Portland decided to shift its meetings to Salem, which is more centralized and the location of Highway De partment offices. The next meeting, July 31 and Aug. 1, will be held here and if contractors do not object the Port land meetings will be discontinued, Chairman Milo Mclver said Fri day. Bid openings, also formerly held in Portland, were shifted to Salem months ago. The commission awarded $13 million in contracts at its meeting Thursday and Friday, including more than $1 million in mid-Willamette Valley projects and an other million to mid-Valley con tractors. Including three from Sa lem, will participate in curriculum workshops starting next week at University of Oregon and Oregon State College. The five groups, each meeting daily for four weeks, will seek improvements to suggest in teach ing of foreign languages, art and crafts, business education, indus trial arts and health. The workshops are sponsored by the State Department of Education in conjunction with the 'two schools. The program is under the direction of Dr. Joseph I. Hall of Salem, state curriculum direc tor. In the past two years, similar committees have studied and made reports suggesting improvements in teaching of mathematics, sci ence, physical education, music, social studies, ana language arts. UAL Plane Named Salem Due for Maiden. Journey A four-engine DC-7 'named "Salem" will take its maiden flight sometime next week as the newest United Air Lines coast-'to-coast custom coach malnliner, UAL Salem agent Harold Sweeney said Friday. The name was chosen to honor the 1000th DC-6 and DC-7 fuse lage to be turned out by Doug las aircraft. It will ha delivered to UAL Thursday. Summer Class Registration to Close at WU r Registration for an expanded summer session at Willamette Uni versity will close at noon Monday and classes will begin at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, Dr. James R. While concentrating on education courses for teachers and undergraduates alike, a greater number of other types of courses are being intro duced. LaBansky, 52, was arrested Friday afternoon on charges of hit and run driving while intoxicated and being drunk in a public place, Marion County sheriff's deputies said. LaBansky allegedly smashed into the car of Omar William Frcmme of Cornelius on the Turner-Marion Road Friday afternoon. The ,Fromme car and a trailer of furniture, including a $200 tele vision set, were reportedly damaged. No injuries were re ported. LaBansky was arrested at Jeffer son by sheriff's deputies. He ap peared in Jefferson Justice Court, where the cases were continued to Monday at 9 a.m. for arraignment. Bail was set at $350. County Jail Inmate Taken to Hospital Nelson franklin Welsh, 18, of 345 Commercial St. NE, an inmate of Marion County jail, was taken to Salem Memorial Hospital about 2 p.m. Friday after suffering what was apparently a lung disorder in his cell, deputies reported. A physi cian later said bis condition was satisfactory. Welsh is awaiting pre-sentence investigation on a car theft charge, deputies added. Princeton Choir Plans 2 Concerts At State Hospital Two appearances of the Prince ton Seminary Choir will be pre sented Monday to Oregon State Hospital patients. The 22-voice choir will appear in the hospital auditorium at 10 a.m. followed by another concert in the courtyard outside the male wards. The choir is on its thirteenth annual summer tour of some 18 states. Members are college grad uates enrolled at Princeton Theo logical Seminary in New Jersey preparing for the Christian minis try. Milburn, 83, Succumbs W. E. Milburn, 83, former long time Salem resident, died Thurs day at Chico, Calif. . where he had lived for the past year. Milburn was in the meat business in this area for a number of years He worked as a meat cutter for the old Steusloff Market after the family came here in 1923 and later had his own market in Hollywood district. From about 1939 to 1950 he was employed as a meat cutter at Taft on the Cost. The family later re turned to Salem, where they lived until leaving for California last year. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Inah F. Milburn, Chico, Calif.; daughter, Mrs. Ethel Lermon, Sa lem; sons, Donald L. Milburn, Salem; Merrill R. Milburn, Glad stone; E. P. Milburn, Chico; eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Chico on Monday. 1,195 Accidents Reported to Board A total of 1,195 accidents, 21 claims for occupational disease and two fatalities were reported to the State Industrial Accident Commission during the week ended June 19.
