STAN BAKER MOTORS, Mi Hag e Cut Still Goal Of County Budget Group By RONALD REEVES Staff Writer, The Statesmaa Marion County Budget Commit tee members were still confident Tuesday that a county tax millage cut is possible despite welfare de partment requests for $491,534 and a motion allowing some $48,000 in county salary increases. The committee passed a motion Tuesday morning during the sec ond day of budget meetings to grant pay raises to employes as suggested in a recent State Civil Service classification study of county Jobs. The motion pulled some 43 coun ty employes up to the beginning salaries suggested in the report. It also allowed increases of $48, 030 to 143 county employes who fell below suggested amounts. No Wages Cut The action gives department heads the right to grant raises to employes up to the fourth step in a six pay raise plan to reach maxi mum salaries. However, no em ployes who are receiving salaries at or above the fourth step are expected to get pay hikes this year. Some county employes are re ceiving salaries above the sug gested amount, but no wages will be cut, officials said. Pay raises will vary from $1.58 per month to over $50 per month, said Margaret Rezmcsek, county accountant. Requests for increased salaries of elected department heads, in cluding the assessor, county clerk. District. Court Judge, county health officer, county justices of the peace, recorder, and treasurer are under study by the committee. Elective positions were not in cluded in the classification survey. Welfare Requests Up Kenneth Peterson, county wel fare director, presented massive requests for the county share in the increasing welfare load re sulting from valley unemployment. A request of $45,743, $12,505 over last year, was asked in the assist ance to the physically disabled; $3,143 for aid to the blind, a drop of $347 from last year; $85,098 for assistance to dependent children, a jump of $34,722 from last year; $155,000 for general assistance pay ments, $74,783 over last year and $202,550 for old age assistance, $6, 929 over a year ago. These amounts represent only the county's 20 per cent share of the total two and a half million dollar budget, Peterson said. The state pays 24 per cent and the fed eral the remaining 65 per cent. Marion County Health depart ment representatives presented a budget of $195,760, which is $19,381 over last year's amount. Most of the proposed increase is for sal' aries. lft' MORNING 'r NOON Cloud Monday, AND NIGHT... Ivoryono Knows ThonbOnly ONI Original PANCAKE HOUSE 4570 N. Portland Rd. horn EN 4-2841 7 Til I P.M.
