Sub-District
Meeting is
Scheduled
The Salem Sub-District of the
Woman's Society of Christian
Service of the Methodist Church
will meet at the West Salem Meth
odist Church at 9:80 a.m. on
Thursday, May 22. The meeting
will open with a devotional period
conducted by Rev. Wayne. Hill,
host pastor. A report on the prog
ress of the expansion program at
the Methodist Home will be given
by the president of the board of
managers, Mrs V. E. Burson.
Presidents of the thirteen soci
eties will report on the activities
of their groups. District officers
will be present and conduct clin
ics in their lines of work. A salad
lunch will be served by the hos
tess society,
At the afternoon session Mrs.
Roy Lockenour, district secretary
of promotion, will conduct a pro
motion quit. Mra. L. A. Walworth,
president of the Oregon Confer
ence, and Mrs. Lawrence Ller
man, president of Salem District,
will -report on the Assembly of
Methodist Women, which they re
cently attended in St Louis. Wil
liam Utley will be heard in vocal
numbers.
Mrs. C. W. Stacey will preside
over the business session and in
charge of registration will be Mes
dames Milton Blackman, E. A.
Dickson, and Leo Espey. Repre
sentatives will be present from
the six Salem Methodist churches,
and from Jefferson, Stayton, Sil
verton, Lyons, Turner, Indepen
dence and Pratum.

Mrs. Marvin L. Coburn (Mary Flagg) whose marriage was an
event of May 1 7 at the First Presbyterian Church. Parents
of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Flagg and Mr. and
Mrs. Jesse Coburn of Dundee. The couple will live in

Dancing Clubs Calendar
Parties for the Weekend
Three dancing flubs will wind up their season with parties
this coming weekend. The 5 Club will hold a cotton dance Friday
night at the American Legion Club. Stubby Mills and his orchestra
will play for dancing between 9:30 and 12:30 o'clock.
The committee for the evening includes Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Zeller, chairmen, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Waterbury, Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Yocum, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nlelion, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Colby and Mr. and Mrs. Charles McBee.
Careosel Sport Daaee
The Carousel Club's final dance of the season win be an event
of Saturday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall. This will be a
sports dance with Harry Wesely's orchestra playing between 9 and
12 o'clock. New officers for the coming year will be elected.
Co-chairmen of the directorate for the affair includes Mr. and
Mrs. J. Wallace Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ahsenmacher.
Assisting on the committee are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beach, Mr.
and Mrs. Gofdon Brownell, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lohrman, Mr. and
Mrs. Forrest Shipley, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Gaetz, Mr. and Mrs.
Irving Miller of Jefferson and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Duncan.
Cirque Club Dinner Dance
The Cirque Club has scheduled a formal dinner dance for Sat
urday night in the Capitol Room of the Senator Hotel. Dave Gen
try's orchestra will play for dancing. The club will hold a sports
dance during the summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ballentyne head the directorate for the
dinner dance, assisted by Mf. and Mrs. Robert L. Elfstrom Jr.,
Mr. and Mra. Murray Schofield, Mr. and. Mrs. Lakln Westphal and
Mr. and Mrs. Vera Kitchel.
Alumnae Will Fete Seniors
Alpha Chi Omega alumnae will
entertain the senior coeds of the
Willamette University chapter at
the home of Mrs. Gordon Cooley
in Ben Lomond Park Monday
night at 8 o'clock. Co-hostesses
will be Mrs. Joseph Moreland and
Mrs. Robert Strong.

Miss Mary Flagg and Marvin
L. Coburn exchanged their mar
riage vows at a morning service
on Saturday at the First Presby
terian Church. Th bride is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. E.
Flagg and the bridegroom is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Coburn
of Dundee.
Dr. Paul Newton Poling per
formed 'the 11 o'clock rites and
Mrs. George Ottum was the organist.
A ballerina gown of lace and
tulle over taffeta was chosen by

the bride for her wedding. The
lace bodice was made with a man
darin collar and the tulle skirt
was enhanced with insets of lace.
A nylon tulle headdress held in
place her fingertip veil and she
carried red roses.
Attend the Couple
Mrs. Alice Stipe was the honor
matron and she wore a pink dotted
Swiss ballerina gown fashioned
empire style with pink bow in
back. She carried pink and white
carnations. Virgil Coburn served
as best man.
Mrs. Flagg wore a navy blue
dress with white accessories and
corsage of pink roses for her
daughter's wedding and Mrs. Co
burn's dress was of royal blue
with corsage of pink roses.
A reception followed in the
church parlor. Mrs. 0. E. Flagg
poured and Mrs. James DeBow
the cake.
When the newlyweds departed
on their trip to Palm Springs, Las
Vegas and Reno the bride changed
to a crystal mint suit with white
hat and black patent accessories.
On their return to Salem they will
be at home at 1320 Nebraska St.
Gamma Phis
Will Give
Benefits
Gamma Phi Beta alumnae are
entertaining with two benefit
parties this week at the Chemek
eta Street home of Mr. Frank
H. Spears on Tuesday at 1:S0 and
t o'clock. Proceeds from the
events will benefit the Genevieve
Dickey Nelson scholarship fund.
Dessert will be served at both
the afternoon and evening parties
with cards following. Anyone wish

Writers to Meet
For Dinner
Members and guests of the Sa
lem Writer's Club will hold a
dinner meeting on Thursday,
May 22 at 6:45 p.m. at China City.
The guest speaker will be Mrs.
Peggy Jeanne Brocklinger of
Amity. Mrs. Brocklinger's titles
of published books are over 100
to date. She writes six novels a
year under the pseudonyms of
Peggy O'More, Betty Brocklinger,
and Jeanne Bowman.
Her work is published by Ar
cadia House and some of her
books have been reprinted in
England. Her work is versatile
as she has worked on newspapers
in Texas, California and the old
Portland Telegram. She is cur
rently librarian at the Amity Li
brary. She is listed in the 1957
Who's Who of American Women
as Peggy O'More.
