Gadabout 1 1 House 0 " psww' WOOD SHINGLES, board and ranch house. 3 Bedrooms Away From House Traffic By JOHN O.B. WALLACE What coiuUtutei an ideal family house? For on aniwer, study the design of this unusual, front-to-back split level ranch home with readily adaptable facilities for grandparents. It has eight rooms, including three bedrooms, arranged on three different levels in such a way that the activities of a busy family pre sent no home traffic problems. The center ball provides excel lent "circulation," yet does not create a corridor effect which often spoils tbt first impression of a house. Farsnal Room It has a formal living room, set against a backdrop of an overhead balcony and an off-center fireplace faced with roman brick, plus an informal living room or playroom which opens through sliding glass panel doors onto a rear terrace. The balcony, on the aame upper level as the bedrooms, is no thor oughfare for getting from a bed room to a bath-room because .the master bedroom has the effect of a auite with a private bath-room and en the other side the other two bedrooms have a separate bath and closeti a part of their area.'- Privacy far Parents .Thus, a problem which exists in many split level ranch houses has been overcome in this plan by Architect Alfred H. '.JUawer The mild 'winter has brought on the unseasonal bloom of flowers this year. There is nothing that will stop them, once they start to open. Should we get cold weather this will hold them back for a while, providing they have not shed their winter bud sheaths. Bloom buds set in full but generally stay firmly closed until proper spring blooming time. QaetUoa Our shrimp plant has become awfully leggy and doesn't seem to look well any more. I don't like this one, but I am very fond of the Inserting Dowels Wooden dowels are sometimes difficult to insert because of trapped liquid glue or air which gets csught in s pocket at the bottom of the hole. To avoid this, sand or file a flat spot along one side of the dowel before tapping it into position. This will permit air and excess glue to escape free ly at the top. Cutting the dowel a fraction of an Inch shorter than the depth of the bole will also help. Time for Arizona Visit Depends Upon Interests The tail-end of winter in the Wil lamette Valley frequently sends a lot ot loll vacationing into tne ' southland. In Arizona, summer heat does shift the focus of tourist interest from the desert areas in the ceo- temperate uplands. These form a semi-circle around Phoenix, start- ine at Prescott on the north, the j Globe copper area to the east, and the Tucson district to the south. D4 Ranch Capital In Wickenburg, the dude ranch capital of the world, visiting is nice n early spring. During the warmer summer months, the principal re sorts in this area close down, but around Tucson, the dude ranches are year-round operations. With altitudes up to 12,000 feet, much of northern Arizona ia closed down ia dead winter, opening up for spring and summer. Northern Arizona has a Main Street running right across it from east to west in U. S. M, a main transcontinen tal highway. Dotted along it are Winslow, Flagstaff and Williams, all with good assortments of motels and other tourist, facilities, open all year. Don't go to Phoenix, however, without going to Scottsburg. just 12 miles north and one of the most delightful (and expensive if you plan to stay) spots you can think of. Plas Graad Caayea Of course, Arizona's piece de resistance is Grand Canyon, best visited in late spring, summer or early fall. 'The main approach to the Canyon's south rim is through Williams, 60 miles to the south or from Oregon via Boulder City. On the rim at Canyon Village, is a complete array of tourist facili ties including El Tovar Hotel, the adjacent Bright Angel Lodge, a cabin camp and trailer areas. 'all operated by the Fred Harvey com pany, the south rim concessionaire of Grand Canyon National Park The Grand Canyon Inn and its surrounding 20 acreage, the only privately owned tract in the huge park, was bought by a New York concern about a year ago, the Golden Crown Mining Corporation, which is working at uranium oper ations on the canyon rim. But the hotel will continue to operate as usual. The Harvey company also runs the Phantom ranch at the bottom of the mile-deep canyon. There are both one-day and overnight trips to the canyon bottom by mule-back, on routes ranging from 12 to 19 miles round trip The north rim of the canyon can reached by a circuitous 200-mile route northward from Flagstaff, but can be best reached on the p-.-Jvi'-VWi ' il ill Minn i ir J Salem, Ore., Sun., Feb 2, '58 Snow Lovers Explore Mt Hood - .5 i ; when now eorera the mountains and the lover of the cold north via Kanab. Iadiaa Festivals While Indians are found offering- i their rugs, jewelry, baskets and pottery at the various resorts the tourist sees them best by visiting the 'reservations or attending their festivals. The reservations of New Mexico's II pueblo tribes are not far off main highways up and down the state. Most of the reservation of the Navajoa, the cation's largest In dian tribe, is In Arizona. It covert 25.000 square miles, so even the Navajo population of more than 75,000 is largely lost in its fastness.
