Our Va L ... ly CHARLES IMLAND Why was It to bitterly cold last week? , . . Drawing on many yean' experience as a valley newspaperman, Editor Earle Rich ardson offered an explanation in the Polk County Itemizer-Ob-server j . Seldom, he wrote, has there been wind with such low temperature . . . When the east wind blows in this area ha observed, it feels cold but seldom is "maybe 28 or 30 de grees that feels like zero" ... But this time, the wind blew wnen the temperature was down to 9 and 10 degrees. '---- If .you think the cold snap gave you a bad time, consider Lyton Rice of Slayton . . . Just before the mercury plunged, Rice agreed to look after the city water pipes while water aupt., John Nightengale, went on vacation . . . Like most valley cities, a lot of Stayton's water pipes went snap, crackle and pop dur ing the cold spell . . . Said Rice at the end of a weary week, "Nightengale sure picked a good time to go on vacation." ,.- Well," anyway, the cute little Gingerbread House drive-in near Mehama was scheduled to be reopened yesterday follow ing its annual two-months shutdown . . . And, as they say in .North Santiam Canyon, when the Gingerbread House reopens, can trout fishing be far behind? Mrs. Carl Hoffman of Aurora has been trying out a lot of egg recipes lately. It seemed like the only thing to do after she dropped a case of 180 eggs ... At nearby Donald grade school, one of the classes moved into the furnace room for a few days during the cold spell . . . Dallas is hurting just a little these days. Big Gerllnger. Carrier plant Is going Just three days a week. DALLAS, Feb. 2 An additional circuit judge for the 12th Judicial district has been requested by the district bar association, it was announced this week by President W. A. Wiest of Independence. Wiest said that the request was in the form of a resolution aenTtb the state legislature The 12th district is comprised of Polk and Yamhill Counties. Copies of the association s resolution were John Ntsblrt't TRUE story "Jhe fan Who Discovered 0. Henry" A How convict Will Porter found a treat writer in himself, Telephone Time SUNDAY, 5:30 P. M, Channel 6 sent to each legislator of both counties. Currently, one circuit Judge serves the two counties, dividing his time between the two. 70 Cases Yearly - Over 700 cases a year are filed in the two circuit courts, it is noted in the resolution. Because the work load has increased dur ing the past several years, asso ciation attorneys feel that it is advisable and expedient to nave two circuit judges in the district. The resolution asks for one cir cuit judge to reside in Polk County and one to reside in Yamhill County. , Crowded dockets during the past several years have necessitated the appointment of judges pro tem to help clear the records. Walker Serves Both For many years. Judge Arlie G. Walker has served both counties on the circuit bench. - 'An additional feature of . the resolution is a request that after the new circuit judge la appointed all juvenile, probate and adoption matters be placed under the Ju risdiction of the circuit judges. These Judicial dutiea would be removed from the county Judge in Polk County. Approval of the atate legislature is necessary for the addition of a second judge.
