Dec. 20 lev-The Securities and exchange Commia aion said today it is investigating to determine whether the Crowell Collier Publishing Co. violated federal law relating to the sale of tecurltiea. Smith, president and board chairman of Crowell Collier, aaid the officera Pastor Says Acid Splashed On Vehicle i MONTGOMERY, Ala., Dec. 20 A Negro minister aaid that two men who appeared to be wearing police uniforms apparent ly splashed acid on his car. A police official (aid the case wat dropped for lack of evidence. The Rev. B. D. Issues Dlsceatiaued ' Crowell Collier, 'among other things, published the magazines Woman's Home Companion and Collier's. Directors of the firm de cided last Friday to discontinue these magazines, the last issues of which appeared today. The SEC said its investigation will be to determine whether the company violated the Securities Act of 193 and the Securities Ex change Art of 1934 by failing to comply with the registration and full disclosure provisions govern ing stock issues. Exchange Passible SEC said the firm In 1955 and 1956 issued four million dollars worth of debentures which could be exchanged for common stock. This waa under a clause exempt ing from the disclosure provisions any securities which are sold pri vately, as contrasted to a public offering. SEC said a question had arisen as to whether the company was entitled to use the exemption pro vision. It said the number of pur chasers who took the debentures, and the extent to which the de bentures have been converted into common stock and the stock sold to the public, raiaed the question. Pen to Ring With Children's Voices At Christmas Time VANCOUVER, B.C., Dec. 10 -(CP) There will be a Christmas atmosphere in Oakalla Prison next week, including the happy ring of children a voices. I Warden Hugh Christie said Wed nesday the attorney-general's de partment had approved an im- Iprecedented move in which the prison will be opened to the fam ilies of 10 "specislly selected" prisoners. Date of the visit has not yet been released, but it will be "sometime over the holiday per iod." said the warden. All visitors, including about 100 children, will be free to mingle with the convicts m the prison gymnasium. The gymn will be decorated for the occasion and warden Christie aaid coffee and cakes wilt con tribute to a "party atmosphere.' All prisoners will have turkey complete with trimmings, on Chri stmas Dsy, and entertainment is planned. Ike Treated as Ordinary Angler By State Official CONCORD, N.H.. Dec. 20 UJI -Although Dwight D. Eisenhower is President of the United States, he is Just another angler to New Hampshire's fish and game com missioner, Ralph G. Carpenter, ac cording to Gov. Lane Dwinell. The governor disclosed to news men thst when the President visited the stste last year Carpen ter demanded "the height, weight and color of eyes and hair along with a personal signature" for a fishing license. DwlncIl ssid he insisted these requirements be waived, adding that Carpenter also attempted un successfully to charge $l a day for services of conservation offi cers in (Tie President's party. The governor alleged "lack of cooperation" from Carpenter's de partment. Carpenter was not avail able for comment. Carpenter and Dwmell both are Republicans. M Wl Ten mors) Hungarian refugees arrived here today, increasing to 104 the number welcomed by Portland in recent days. . Two of the new arrivals had been border guards under orders to stop persons fleeing from their Communist-dominated country. . ' The two, who have taken new names, said refugees poured through the woods and across fields in groups of SO, 70 and M. Instead of halting them, the two guards led them through mine fields along the Austrian border. One day, they temselves walked acroae the border to freedom. Still another group of Hungar ians, the number unknown, is due here by train tomorrow. It in cludes one family of five related to Mrs. Bella Kalotay of Port land. The Oregon Committee for Hun garian Refugees 'said the new group will be taken care of, al though the committee is running short of available money because of the large number of arrivals. The committee pays transporta tion and food until a sponsor takes over. Money-raising campaigns for the refugees are continuing. Access Road Contract Let WASHINGTON. It went to Funderburk Construc tion Co., Sutherlin, Ore. The work will be done on Yel lowstone road, a branch leading off the main Quarttville road. It ia part of a system which enentu ally will provide access to 2,700 ooo board feet of old-growth tim ber. The Bureau of Land Manage ment administers about 45 per cent of the timber and the Agri culture Department's Forest Serv ice another 45 per cent. Rotate m m r;i m Clue Lacking To Canadian Plane's Fate VANCOUVER (CP) A single aircraft hunted for three hours Thursday for the Trias-Canada Air Lines piano which disappeared In southwest British Columbia Dec. t with (1 persons aboard. It found nothing. The search craft, a twin-engine RCAF Dakota, poked In and out of clouds hanging over the moun tains near Hope, 100 miles east of here, while about 50 airplanes were held to the ground here waiting for the' weather to clear. Finally, the Dakota waa forced to return to Vancouver when the clouds became too thick, the air force said. An RCAF spokesman said a full-scale search will be resumed when the weather clears. Forecast for the general search area was showers Thursday night, cloudy with a few sunny intervale Fri day.
