despite good performances turned
in by selected steel and ship
building issues.
Volume totaled 2,240,000 shares
compared with 2 560.000 yesterday.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks declined $1.10 to $175.10
with the industrials down $2 10,
the rails down 60 cents and util
ities down 10 cents
The fall in the average brought
an estimated decline of around
$1,300,000,000 in the quoted value
of stocks listed on the New York
Stock Exchange.
Of 1,166 issues traded, declines
outnumbered advances by 649 to
267. There were 155 new lows for
the year and only 10 new highs.

slight dip at the start, grains
moved higher, on the Board of
Trade today.
Wheat closed unchanged to
higher, corn H-Ta higher, oats la
's higher, rye 1 io l' higher, soy
beans 'i-3'j higher and lard 20 to
42 cents a hundred pounds higher.
Wheat was less able to hold onto
its gains than other cereals, and
this was particularly true of the
new crop months. A snow storm
in the Great Tlains should provide
wheat with needed moisture, trad
ers reasoned.
Yugoslavia picked up 430.000
bushels of wheat and a big busi
ness was expected shortly with
Turkey, Greece, Colombia and
French North . Africa. It was ru
