Hi) Statesman, Salem, Ore., Sun., Nov. 18, '56 Do's and Dont's In Home Repairs DO . . . remember that a worn threshold (sometimes call ed a saddle) is unsightly, leaves a fap under the door and often is a safety hazard. DO ... pry up the- old threshold carefully so that it can be removed in one piece if pos sibleand used as a model in buying or making a new one. DO . . . when the threshold will not come loose, split it with Zoning Homes Cuts Costs In Heating , In view at rising fuel prLcps the economy features of zoning the heating system have become more important.. Zoning permits different tem peratures in different parts of a house. For example, the living . room and dining room can be kept warm er than the bedrooms which are used principally for sleeping and do not require ts much heat. Or, in i long ranch-type house, the wing exposed to cold north winds can -be toned to receive extra heat . Ihus there, u a significant effect a chisel and a mallet; the pieces then will come up easily. DO . . . purchase a thresh old the same size as the old one or slightly larger so that the ex cess can be trimmed off to make a tight fit. DO ... in putting down the new threshold, stagger the nails on either side of the center sec tion. DON'T . . neglect to re move the old nails; if you ham mer them into the 'floor, they may loosen later on and push their way up into the new thresh old. DON'T .... forget that, oc casionally, the old threshold will not come up unless you first re move the door stop, the long strip of wood that runs vertical ly along the door jamb. DONT . . . risk splitting the Good Trees Need Expert, Regular Care Just as much as household ani mal pets, trees require regular care if they are to remain healthy and grow luxuriantly year after year. Specialized knowledge is necessary if your trees are to be cared for properly. By all means' employ an arbor ist to care for your trees if at all possible. The qualified arborist will diagnose insect and disease problems, if present, and he will .nli. iv.AM -. ; . f .. .. . i .. - . j i nse'an d u or for potting up in early spring or for fiats, .'gather'' it now. Fire is an excellent ' sterilizer. Also, if you have rose foliage lying around, which has fallen from attacks of black spot, don't put this into the compost. It is better to burn it. In raking leaves from trees on the lawn, don't pile up more than you can remove at the same time. Rake a small amount, remove. Repeat. This should be the recipe. Big piles of .leaves gathered on the lawn have two faults: First, they don't always get carried away at once, and when left for even a few days, may kill off the grass beneath them.' It takes a a little while to restore this. Second, they may, if a wind arises, blow away and then the raking tniist be repeated. Unless you are trying to develop arm muscles, this is useless labor. In one shop we found a small metal pot a dull blue, with brass trim. Was about a four-inch pot -seiling. for S6.95,. Really very lovely. W'ould be nice for the dwarf Sansevieriea trifasciala (Siiake plant to iiiost of us); Then we found two lovely cut glass vases about six inches tall ... We could see them with small rose buds,, sweet peas the kind of vases the untalented of us can use by just sticking blooms in the blooms and the vase carry the picture without any special arrangement. These would be nice for the choosey. They ranged (according to the amount of cutting from $11 to $14. - - - .- We found a brand new book on orchid growing . . . Many older homes, a partments, and hotels still have china handles on faucets and valves.. They should be replaced by faucets with metal because por celain or china handles are easily broken and are a hazard, A case in point is the injury sustained by Ransom Jackson, third baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers. "Randy" gashed his thumb on a porcelain handle in a shower at his hotel. Many yean ago the plumbing in dustry realized the hazards of porcelain faucet handles. New plumbing fixtures have not been equipped with china faucet handles for many years. All new faucets and .fitting are now equipped with handles made of chromium plated brass.
