When I lose my en thusiasm, no one will have to ask me to quit. I'll just go back to selling newspapers in Sar.,, Fran cisco .and retire Criacetully from ; Hollywood," he comments. , He has made 62 pictures In SO years, not a one has ever Inst money and some have been i among the biggest grossers in i movie history. "Quo Vadis." with a 20 million worldwide gross, is one of the industry's block busters. i Mervyn has made such pictures as "Fugitive from a Chan Gang," i "Random Harvest," "The Wizard of Ot," "Mr. Roberts," "The Bad Seed," and his latest, 'Toward the Unknown." i How did LeRoy get such a bat ting average over 30 years? And the script must always be more important lhan. the stars." theater In his native San Fran cisco. One of his best customers was the late Theodore Roberta, the Moses of Cecil B. DeMille's first "Ten Commandments." jank Cemlng Roberts offered Mervyn a bit role in a play. The part called for him to climb in a tree and yeIlr..'The Yanks are, comingl", ' He " did it so eagerly opening night that he fell out of th$ tree and got one of the biggest laughs of the night. "The audience loved It so much that they raised my pay from (3 to $5 a week.. I could see that comedy paid well." He became a gag man for movie comedies. It was good money but Mervyn didn't like the title. He took out a trade paper advertise ment to announce himself as "First National's comedy con structor." Another Title ' "I would probably still be a gag man it that title had stuck but Inside TV "T I - ; ' a Is IV televisional irscesr Reporting Election I decided that I had to get an other title, so I asked the studio boss for a chance to direct," he recalls. When John McCormick. the First National boss,' asked Mervyn whom he wanted to direct, Mer vyn replied: Colleen Moore, the biggest star on the Jot and Mc Cormick' wife. McCormick was impressed by LMervyn s . confidence. He was 23 then but looked 17. Mervyn was assigned to direct Mary Astor and Lloyd Hughes in f'No Place to Go." The picture made money which meant Mervyn got another one "Harold Teen" with Arthur Lake. It made even more money. In 1934. LeRoy was one of War ner Bros, ton directors. By EVE STARR HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 10-STARR-DUST; Television was at its very spanking best Tuesday night Given a running , news story it could sink Its electronic teeth into, the medi um tossed . its commercial pro gramming out lating machines of one kind or an other and all relayed the mount ing returns in record time. With Edward R. Murrow in the Middle East and sad-faced Eric Sevareid seemingly having misplaced h i s sense of humor. I stuck in the main to the bright new NBC news team of Chet Huntley and Dave Brinkley. Huntley, of course, is an old West Coast radio hand and. to me, an old friend. Since dynamic Judy arrived in late September the weekly box of fice take has steadily hovered above the $.'6,000 mark. Her hefty stipend is a well-guarded secret. Already there have been two quick contract extensions through January. That will tie the old mark and further extension seems likely.
